Hydrodynamical simulations provide spatially resolved predictions for the co-evolution of dark matter, gas, stars, and black holes, but rely on phenomenological subgrid models for small-scale processes (e.g., star formation). Semi-analytic models (SAMs), by contrast, gain efficiency through simplified, analytic treatments of the same processes, at the cost of reduced predictive scope.
