This causes a deflection in the ball's trajectory. In this paper we derive the equations that describe the motion of a ball rolled over a shallow step and present the results of our experimental test. This simple demonstration can be used in any classroom where the physics teacher has access to a ball and a stack of papers. Prior work has shown that a ball rolled over an edge can maintain its speed, as is commonly assumed, but it can also experience an increase or even decre","authors_text":"Keith Zengel, Laruen Boehnert","cross_cats":[],"headline":"","license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/","primary_cat":"physics.ed-ph","submitted_at":"2026-05-19T20:42:59Z","title":"Motion of a ball rolled over a shallow step"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"2605.20481","kind":"arxiv","version":1},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:a0affafd343a0f7c97871b2ed95e97bcb80f9c928a6b0f45dff56f498ed97da9","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-21T01:04:39Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"386fdb0c76d254c4be7f695912d1582619eea07ec74583e6c59180caeb67275f","cross_cats_sorted":[],"license":"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/","primary_cat":"physics.ed-ph","submitted_at":"2026-05-19T20:42:59Z","title_canon_sha256":"a250fda06ebe378a0091eed3819d35348e8e395415f8c7c6a31d49556052a2d4"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"2605.20481","kind":"arxiv","version":1}},"canonical_sha256":"de3dbc3c1e897fb38cb22f13de84f36a43cbd033363fa19ecf76ebd8f181b355","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"de3dbc3c1e897fb38cb22f13de84f36a43cbd033363fa19ecf76ebd8f181b355","first_computed_at":"2026-05-21T01:04:39.308964Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-21T01:04:39.308964Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"nfnsdZ8UWy+TG0hyceLrnQJNJ8BDkmx2naDiON5dr4bMMWeZ4GP56E9fpHIkbIL4V4TL0vz2YfEQ8tRpPgUKDA==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-21T01:04:39.309446Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"2605.20481","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":1}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:a0affafd343a0f7c97871b2ed95e97bcb80f9c928a6b0f45dff56f498ed97da9","sha256:c1862dbf6785d20252039148235230164f758003be6d23960cb96ae5b257bd6c"],"state_sha256":"f32e655a6ea85f28e1165ba7ee9595c632b803414f60d96305072f36eecba4fd"}
