Similar to a strained graphene, such nonuniform hopping amplitudes produce valley-dependent pseudomagnetic fields for fermions near the two Dirac points, resulting in the formation of Landau levels. The dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the honeycomb plane yield a long-range repulsive interaction.
