Using a two-time-scale perturbation approach in terms of the small parameter $\\alpha=2m/(M+m)$, we show that the evolution towards thermal equilibrium proceeds in two stages. The first stage is a fast, deterministic, adiabatic relaxation towards mechanical equilibrium.
