Den- sity functional theories, whether quantum or classical, rely on abstract concepts that are non- intuitive. However, they are at the heart of powerful tools and active fields of research in both physics and chemistry. They led to the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry. DFT is illustrated here in its most simple and yet physically relevant form: the classical density functional theory of an ideal fluid of classical particles. For illustration purpose, it is applied to the prediction of the molecular struc","authors_text":"Daniel Borgis, Guillaume Jeanmairet, Maximilien Levesque, Nicolas Levy","cross_cats":[],"headline":"","license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2014-01-08T12:24:36Z","title":"Introduction to Classical Density Functional Theory by a Computational Experiment"},"references":{"count":0,"internal_anchors":0,"resolved_work":0,"sample":[],"snapshot_sha256":"258153158e38e3291e3d48162225fcdb2d5a3ed65a07baac614ab91432fd4f57"},"source":{"id":"1401.1679","kind":"arxiv","version":3},"verdict":{"created_at":null,"id":null,"model_set":{},"one_line_summary":"","pipeline_version":null,"pith_extraction_headline":"","strongest_claim":"","weakest_assumption":""}},"verdict_id":null}}],"author_attestations":[],"timestamp_anchors":[],"storage_attestations":[],"citation_signatures":[],"replication_records":[],"corrections":[],"mirror_hints":[],"record_created":{"event_id":"sha256:235cb39f993593ae1f23a98f5b0e137e045274e06e940bbeacb0bdec10b29fa2","target":"record","created_at":"2026-05-18T02:40:03Z","signer":{"key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","signer_id":"pith.science","signer_type":"pith_registry"},"payload":{"attestation_state":"computed","canonical_record":{"metadata":{"abstract_canon_sha256":"9ff60df27869cbcb0cf9584de536679d215e99e9358405e83ffbcb03224a4ac8","cross_cats_sorted":[],"license":"http://arxiv.org/licenses/nonexclusive-distrib/1.0/","primary_cat":"physics.chem-ph","submitted_at":"2014-01-08T12:24:36Z","title_canon_sha256":"f765b6cb7be9ff5816de576b5994e912e46aefd8af6db98ecd6759453950b70f"},"schema_version":"1.0","source":{"id":"1401.1679","kind":"arxiv","version":3}},"canonical_sha256":"995484d63000ea12f45cee7f2c180fe585cecf75529c87ee09b84608240f046b","receipt":{"algorithm":"ed25519","builder_version":"pith-number-builder-2026-05-17-v1","canonical_sha256":"995484d63000ea12f45cee7f2c180fe585cecf75529c87ee09b84608240f046b","first_computed_at":"2026-05-18T02:40:03.349468Z","key_id":"pith-v1-2026-05","kind":"pith_receipt","last_reissued_at":"2026-05-18T02:40:03.349468Z","public_key_fingerprint":"8d4b5ee74e4693bcd1df2446408b0d54","receipt_version":"0.3","signature_b64":"SSlhQAps1Gl1TX5/9RuNAMKjO+IpTYZqym9vqILYZOEki1SvwcPLbWGdJGMQW07lUcAaPZCjoYadJQgIvNr4Aw==","signature_status":"signed_v1","signed_at":"2026-05-18T02:40:03.349983Z","signed_message":"canonical_sha256_bytes"},"source_id":"1401.1679","source_kind":"arxiv","source_version":3}}},"equivocations":[],"invalid_events":[],"applied_event_ids":["sha256:235cb39f993593ae1f23a98f5b0e137e045274e06e940bbeacb0bdec10b29fa2","sha256:aed617e0d5723f5bfca31536e65ab6ad185b5b8200c619e23fc192aa0d886af3"],"state_sha256":"6517fc63b7b8fab5e72e12654194859b0d8b2d6cf4de660fb2556977133a00a9"}
