If the axion mass depends on temperature, these inhomogeneities induce spatial fluctuations of the axion mass, providing a new source term for axion density perturbations. We show that this mechanism is most efficient when the reheating temperature lies just below the mass-saturation scale $T_\\Lambda$, and can drive axion overdensities to order unity by matter--radiation equality.
