This review discusses Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in the astrophysical context, with a focus on inviscid gas dynamics. The particle-based SPH technique allows an intuitive and simple formulation of hydrodynamics that has excellent conservation properties and can be coupled to self-gravity easily and highly accurately. The Lagrangian character of SPH allows it to automatically adjust its resolution to the clumping of matter, a property that makes the scheme ideal for many applications in astrophysics, where often a large dynamic range in density is encountered. We discuss the derivation of the basic SPH equations in their modern formulation, and give an overview about extensions of SPH developed to treat physics such as radiative transfer, thermal conduction, relativistic dynamics or magnetic fields. We also briefly describe some of the most important applications areas of SPH in astrophysical research. Finally, we provide a critical discussion of the accuracy of SPH for different hydrodynamical problems, including measurements of its convergence rate for important classes of problems.

  1. Survival is not Enough: Dust Sputtering, Growth, and H$_2$ Formation in Galactic Winds

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.5 of 10

Entrained clouds form high H2 fractions only with dust growth at densities ≳10–30 times the cloud-survival critical density; without growth, DGR dilution and sputtering keep them atomic.

  2. Smoothed particle magnetohydrodynamics for simulations of galaxy and cosmic structure formation

    astro-ph.GA 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A new conservative SPMHD scheme in SWIFT passes standard tests and achieves the first coupling of the EAGLE galaxy formation model to magnetohydrodynamics.

  3. The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability and smoothed particle hydrodynamics

    astro-ph.IM 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

SPH simulations of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability converge to the reference solution when physical Navier-Stokes dissipation and a high-order kernel are used.

  4. On the boundary condition and related instability in the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

    physics.comp-ph 2019-08 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

Boundary condition handling, not just kernel choice, largely determines whether SPH simulations of Burgers' equation stay stable, and particles can cross through each other near boundaries when smoothing length far ex...

  5. Interstellar dust production, destruction and effects of dust depletion in galaxies

    astro-ph.GA 2025-06 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

The paper reviews dust production, destruction and growth processes in galaxies, compiles literature data on comoving dust mass density, presents evidence for and against interstellar dust growth, and identifies the h...
