abstract

We discuss the ability of a dark fluid becoming relevant around the time of matter radiation equality to significantly relieve the tension between local measurements of the Hubble constant and CMB inference, within the $\Lambda$CDM model. We show that the gravitational impact of acoustic oscillations in the dark fluid balance the effects on the CMB and result in an improved fit to CMB measurements themselves while simultaneously raising the Hubble constant. The required balance favors a model where the fluid is a scalar field that converts its potential to kinetic energy around matter radiation equality which then quickly redshifts away. We derive the requirements on the potential for this conversion mechanism and find that a simple canonical scalar with two free parameters for its local slope and amplitude robustly improves the fit to the combined data by $\Delta\chi^2 \approx 12.7$ over $\Lambda$CDM. We uncover the CMB polarization signatures that can definitively test this scenario with future data.

  1. Accurate method for ultralight axion CMB and matter power spectra

    astro-ph.CO 2024-12 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

AxiECAMB computes CMB and matter power spectra for ultralight axions across 10^-33 to 10^-18 eV by time-averaging fast field oscillations, with metric and fluid matching that reduces errors far below cosmic variance f...

  2. Hubble tension: the shape wall

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

Late-time modifications to the expansion history can raise H0 by at most about 2% (conservative) to 3.7% (permissive) if the CMB acoustic scale is fixed.

  3. Cosmological Evidence for Dark Axion-Dark Baryon Interactions from Apparent Phantom Crossing

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Dark axion–dark baryon interactions improve the fit to CMB+DESI+SNe by Δχ²=-14.5 over ΛCDM, via a non-monotonic dark-matter mass that mimics phantom crossing, while leaving the Hubble tension unresolved.

  4. The $H_0$ world cup. II. A comprehensive competition between proposed Hubble tension solutions

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Against a common 2025-26 dataset (Planck PR4, ACT DR6, SPT-3G, DESI DR2, Pantheon+), early dark energy and early modified gravity models win the H0 competition (~3σ residual tension), while radiation and late-time sol...

  5. The $H_0$ World Cup. I. Summary of the baseline group stage results

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

In a systematic head-to-head analysis, early dark energy and early modified gravity models reduce the Hubble tension to about 3σ and are favored over ΛCDM, while radiation and late-time alternatives are not.

  6. Can the universe experience an AdS landscape since matter-radiation equality?

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A universe with an AdS (negative cosmological constant) phase at recombination and another at low redshift is compatible with Planck, DESI, Pantheon Plus and SH0ES data, though not preferred by them.

  7. Can the sound horizon-free measurement of $H_0$ constrain early new physics?

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Mock galaxy-survey analyses show that sound-horizon-free H0 measurements do not currently rule out BAO-compatible early dark energy models, and LambdaCDM-derived priors can bias the result.

  8. Hubble tension: a short review of theoretical explanations

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 4.0 of 10

A comprehensive review finds no theoretical Hubble-tension solution yet passes all consistency tests; new early-dark-energy chains reach high H0 only when the SH0ES calibration is added.

  9. Imprint of swampland-inspired coupled early dark energy

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A swampland-inspired DM-EDE coupling is tested against DESI DR2 BAO data, showing the EDE potential construction affects late-time dark energy constraints.

  10. Using the Kaniadakis horizon entropy in the presence of neutrinos to alleviate the Hubble and $ S_{8} $ Tensions

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

A Kaniadakis entropy cosmology with neutrinos shifts H0 and S8 toward intermediate values, but the entropy parameter is consistent with zero and the tensions are not clearly resolved.

  11. The Hubble tension: A decade review

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 3.0 of 10

Pure early or late fixes to the Hubble tension are tightly constrained; remaining options are combined early-late interacting dark energy or new physics at the local-to-homogeneous transition.
