abstract

An accidental U(1) Peccei-Quinn (PQ) symmetry automatically arises in a class of SO(10) unified theories upon gauging the SU(3)$_{f}$ flavour group. The PQ symmetry is protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_4 \times \mathbb{Z}_3$ center of $\text{SO(10)} \times \text{SU(3)}_f$ up to effective operators of canonical dimension six. However, high-scale contributions to the axion potential posing a PQ quality problem arise only at $d=9$. In the pre-inflationary PQ breaking scenario the axion mass window is predicted to be $m_a \in [7 \times 10^{-8}, 10^{-3}]$ eV, where the lower end is bounded by the seesaw scale and the upper end by iso-curvature fluctuations. A high-quality axion, that is immune to the PQ quality problem, is obtained for $m_a \gtrsim 0.02$ eV. We finally offer a general perspective on the PQ quality problem in grand unified theories.

  1. Accidental Peccei-Quinn Symmetry From Gauged U(1) and a High Quality Axion

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Three explicit axion models are built where a gauged axial U(1) makes the Peccei-Quinn symmetry accidental, preserving axion quality against quantum gravity and giving domain wall number one.

  2. Five dimensional $SU(5) \times U(1)_{\rm PQ}$ grand unification

    hep-ph 2024-12 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The authors propose a 5D SU(5) x U(1)_PQ orbifold model in which SU(5) breaking and a high-quality QCD axion from the fifth component of the U(1) field arise from the same boundary conditions, with intermediate-scale ...

  3. Axions at the meV Crossroads: Theory, Cosmology, Astrophysics, and Experiments

    hep-ph 2026-03 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

The meV axion window is presented as a coherent, cross-validated search program in which string theory, stellar cooling, dark matter, and new detector concepts converge on the same mass range.
