abstract

Two of the most pressing questions in physics are the microscopic nature of the dark matter that comprises 84% of the mass in the universe and the absence of a neutron electric dipole moment. These questions would be resolved by the existence of a hypothetical particle known as the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion. In this work, we probe the hypothesis that axions constitute dark matter, using the ABRACADABRA-10cm experiment in a broadband configuration, with world-leading sensitivity. We find no significant evidence for axions, and we present 95% upper limits on the axion-photon coupling down to the world-leading level $g_{a\gamma\gamma}<3.2 \times10^{-11}$ GeV$^{-1}$, representing one of the most sensitive searches for axions in the 0.41 - 8.27 neV mass range. Our work paves a direct path for future experiments capable of confirming or excluding the hypothesis that dark matter is a QCD axion in the mass range motivated by String Theory and Grand Unified Theories.

  1. Axiverse Lampposts

    hep-ph 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In a hierarchical multi-axion theory with random couplings, axion field ranges shrink with 1/sqrt(N), generic axion–SM couplings are suppressed, but the QCD axion's coupling is unsuppressed.

  2. Dark Matter Nuclear Magnetic Resonance is Sensitive to Dark Photons and the Axion-Photon Coupling

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

CASPEr-Gradient, an NMR axion search, could simultaneously probe dark photon kinetic mixing to about 3e-16 and axion-photon coupling to about 2e-16 GeV^-1 near a mass of 1 micro-eV.

  3. String Theory and Grand Unification Suggest a Sub-Microelectronvolt QCD Axion

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

String-theoretic axions consistent with grand unification and proton decay are predicted to have masses in the 3e-11 to 1e-8 eV window, with at most 47 axions in the Kreuzer-Skarke ensemble.

  4. Hunting for Axions in REactor neutrino COherent scattering Detection Experiment

    hep-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

RECODE, a reactor experiment with two germanium detectors, could probe axion-photon and axion-electron couplings into the cosmological triangle region at masses around 0.3 to 0.9 MeV.

  5. Earth as a transducer for ultralight bosonic dark-matter detection

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

The Earth can act as a giant transducer: EM-coupled ultralight dark matter induces a global, radius-enhanced oscillating magnetic field, and existing magnetometer arrays already set leading direct constraints.

  6. Experiments to test the hypothesis for solar and dark matter axions

    hep-ph 2025-07 unverdicted novelty 1.0 of 10

This is a pedagogical review of haloscope and helioscope experiments searching for dark matter and solar axions, with an overview of near-future technological developments.
