General relativity, though the most successful theory of gravity, has been continuously modified to resolve its incompatibility with quantum mechanics and explain the origin of dark energy or dark matter. One way to test these modified gravity theories is to study the gravitational waves emitted during the ringdown of binary mergers, which consist of quasinormal modes. In several modified gravity theories, the even- and odd-parity gravitational perturbations of non-rotating and slowly rotating black holes have different quasinormal mode frequencies, breaking the isospectrality of general relativity. For black holes with arbitrary spin in modified gravity, there were no avenues to compute quasinormal modes except numerical relativity, until recent extensions of the Teukolsky formalism. In this work, we describe how to use the modified Teukolsky formalism to study isospectrality breaking in modified gravity. We first introduce how definite-parity modes are defined through combinations of Weyl scalars in general relativity, and then, we extend this definition to modified gravity. We then use the eigenvalue perturbation method to show how the degeneracy in quasinormal mode frequencies of different parity is broken in modified gravity. To demonstrate our analysis, we also apply it to some specific modified gravity theories. Our work lays the foundation for studying isospectrality breaking of quasinormal modes in modified gravity for black holes with arbitrary spin.

  1. Schr\"odinger perturbation theory for black hole quasinormal modes

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A bilinear-form framework computes black-hole quasinormal-mode frequency shifts to any order, but the mode-sum expansion of the first-order mode shift diverges and needs a continuum piece.

  2. Gravitational waveforms from binaries in higher-derivative gravity: a Love story

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

In higher-derivative gravity, the leading correction to extreme-mass-ratio inspiral waveforms and fluxes enters at 5PN order and is controlled by the ℓ=2 tidal Love number.

  3. Parametrized beyond-Teukolsky framework in the time domain

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

First time-domain implementation of the parametrized beyond-Teukolsky framework, validated against frequency-domain benchmarks for low multipoles and yielding new amplitude, phase, quadratic-coefficient, and tail-onse...

  4. Parity violating spectral dynamics of black holes in dynamical Chern-Simons gravity

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In dynamical Chern-Simons gravity, an environmental potential bump reshapes black hole quasinormal-mode spectra, producing branch reconnections, a delayed overtaking instability, and scalar-mode-dominated ringdown tha...

  5. Extreme mass-ratio inspiral within an ultralight scalar cloud I. Scalar radiation

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Scalar radiation from an EMRI in an ultralight scalar cloud is computed semi-analytically, showing dipole clouds decelerate and quadrupole clouds accelerate the inspiral, with up to about 100 rad dephasing after 18 months.

  6. Bound States of the Schwarzschild Black Hole

    gr-qc 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The bound states of the inverted Regge-Wheeler potential are exponentially condensed near zero energy and strongly delocalized, linking black hole overtone instability to long-range potential features.
