We study a model for the initial state of the universe based on a gravitational path integral that includes connected geometries which simultaneously produce bra and ket of the wave function. We argue that a natural object to describe this state is the Wigner distribution, which is a function on a classical phase space obtained by a certain integral transform of the density matrix. We work with Lorentzian de Sitter Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in which we find semiclassical saddle-points for pure gravity, as well as when we include matter components such as a CFT and a classical inflaton field. We also discuss different choices of fixing time reparametrizations. In the regime of large universes our connected geometry dominates over the Hartle-Hawking saddle and gives a distribution that has a meaningful probabilistic interpretation for local observables. It does not, however, give a normalizable probability measure on the entire phase space of the theory.

  1. JT gravity on the worldline

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Coupling a worldline observer to JT gravity replaces its evolution operator by an exactly computed average over fluctuating Euclidean times; the fluctuations are small in the disk but large on the double trumpet.

  2. Imprint of the black hole interior on thermal four-point correlators

    hep-th 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Analytically continuing and smearing thermal four-point correlators turns them into flat-space scattering amplitudes at a bulk point inside the black hole.

  3. Microstate counting from defects in de Sitter

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Counting defect microstates via Lorentzian wormholes reproduces the de Sitter and Schwarzschild-de Sitter entropy area laws.

  4. Stochastic inflation as an open quantum system

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Stochastic inflation emerges from an open-quantum-system derivation, with a Lindblad master equation that reduces to and corrects Starobinsky's Fokker-Planck equation.
