abstract

We study gravitational radiation for a positive value of the cosmological constant $\Lambda$. We rely on two battle-tested procedures: (i) We start from the same null coordinate system used by Bondi and Sachs for $\Lambda = 0$, but, introduce boundary conditions adapted to allow radiation when $\Lambda>0$. (ii) We determine the asymptotic symmetries by studying, \`a la Regge-Teitelboim, the surface integrals generated in the action by these boundary conditions. A crucial difference with the $\Lambda=0$ case is that the wave field does not vanish at large distances, but is of the same order as de Sitter space. This novel property causes no difficulty; on the contrary, it makes quantities finite at every step, without any regularization. A direct consequence is that the asymptotic symmetry algebra consists only of time translations and space rotations. Thus, it is not only finite-dimensional, but smaller than de Sitter algebra. We exhibit formulas for the energy and angular momentum and their fluxes. In the limit of $\Lambda$ tending to zero, these formulas go over continuously into those of Bondi, but the symmetry jumps to that of Bondi, Metzner and Sachs. The expressions are applied to exact solutions, with and without radiation present, and also to the linearized theory.

  1. The $SO(1,4)$ flux-balance laws of de Sitter at quadrupolar order

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

All ten SO(1,4) flux-balance laws for quadrupolar perturbations around de Sitter are derived, including new linear momentum and boost formulas, and the flat limit is recovered.

  2. Octupolar Gravitational Radiation in de Sitter Spacetime

    gr-qc 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The metric perturbation from a localized source in de Sitter spacetime is derived at octupolar order in generalized harmonic gauge, including the cosmological tail, the first extension beyond quadrupole order.

  3. Gravitational Memory Beyond Null Infinity through Finite-Distance Carrollian Screens

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Finite-distance null screens carry a Carrollian memory whose leading tracefree large-radius part reproduces the standard Bondi displacement memory in Robinson–Trautman spacetimes.

  4. Twisting asymptotically-flat spacetimes

    gr-qc 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Twisting asymptotically-flat spacetimes are brought into a generalized Bondi gauge with finite radial expansion, producing new flux-balance laws, Carroll-boost symmetries, and finite supertranslated Kerr–Taub–NUT metrics.

  5. Linearized gravitational waves in de Sitter space-time

    gr-qc 2024-11 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

In linearized gravity on de Sitter space, the truncation inconsistency flagged by Compère, Hoque and Kutluk is traced to the particular solution failing the generalized harmonic gauge condition, with a homogeneous sol...
