The transformation of cold neutral intergalactic hydrogen into a highly ionized warm plasma marks the end of the cosmic dark ages and the beginning of the age of galaxies. The details of this process reflect the nature of the early sources of radiation and heat, the statistical characteristics of the large-scale structure of the Universe, the thermodynamics and chemistry of cosmic baryons, and the histories of star formation and black hole accretion. A number of massive data sets from new ground- and space-based instruments and facilities over the next decade are poised to revolutionize our understanding of primeval galaxies, the reionization photon budget, the physics of the intergalactic medium (IGM), and the fine-grained properties of hydrogen gas in the "cosmic web". In this review we survey the physics and key aspects of reionization-era modeling and describe the diverse range of computational techniques and tools currently available in this field.

  1. Generating Moving Field Initial Conditions with Spatially Varying Boost

    physics.comp-ph 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A 'spatially varying boost' algorithm assigns arbitrary, position-dependent bulk velocities to field initial data by composing local Lorentz boosts, demonstrated on solitons, Proca fields, and spin-1 wave dark matter.

  2. Cosmological Concordance in an Especially Opaque Universe: A Tentative Cosmological Detection of Physical Neutrino Mass in $\Lambda$CDM

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 reject novelty 6.0 of 10

Imposing a high prior on τ = 0.11 ± 0.006 produces a 2σ positive neutrino mass sum of 0.10 eV and restores concordance between CMB and DESI data inside ΛCDM.

  3. Reionization in HESTIA: Studying reionization in the LG through zoom simulations

    astro-ph.CO 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Radiative transfer on HESTIA zoom simulations shows the Local Group reionized inside-out, with MW/M31 half-ionized by z~8.6-9.2, well before the global midpoint at z~7.1-7.7.

  4. Little Red reionization factories

    astro-ph.GA 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

LRDs may drive cosmic reionization: tidal fields are said to funnel intergalactic hydrogen into colliding streams at LRD sites, igniting starbursts that ionize the gas.
