abstract

The exploration of long-lived particles in the MeV-GeV region is a formidable task but it may provide us a unique access to dark sectors. Fixed-target facilities with sufficiently energetic and intense proton beams are an ideal tool for this challenge. In this work we show that the production rate of Axion-Like-Particles (ALPs) coupled pre-dominantly to photons receives a significant contribution from daughter-photons of secondary $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ mesons created in the proton shower. We carefully compare the PYTHIA simulated spectra of such secondaries to experimental literature, compute the ALP flux from the Primakoff conversion of these photons, and finally revisit existing limits on ALPs and update the prospects for a set of existing and future searches. Our results show that taking this production mechanism into account significantly enhances the sensitivity compared to previous studies based on coherent ALP production in primary proton-nucleus interactions.

  1. Searching for long-lived ALPs with a laser-assisted optical dump

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A laser-assisted optical dump could probe ALP-electron couplings down to ~10^-6 (10^-7) GeV^-1 with 16.5 (125) GeV electron beams, and when both couplings are present the Primakoff process improves the electron-coupli...

  2. Loop-Level Lepton Flavor Violation and Diphoton Signals in the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

    hep-ph 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Recasting axion limits onto the one-loop H3 couplings of the minimal left-right symmetric model excludes the right-handed scale up to 2×10^9 GeV and could eventually probe 6×10^11 GeV.

  3. Constraining ALP-Top Interaction from the Chromoelectric Dipole Moment of the Top Quark

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper derives the one- and two-loop top quark CEDM induced by a CP-violating ALP at q^2 = m_t^2 and uses it to set new bounds on the ALP-top coupling, with the neutron EDM giving the strongest of the three new limits.

  4. Concurrent Exploration of Axion-Like Particle Interactions with Gauge Bosons at the LHC

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Expected and observed 95% CL limits on the ALP couplings to gluons and W bosons are derived for a 1 MeV ALP, from simulated ZZa/WWa events at the HL-LHC and from recast CMS Z+jets and W+jets measurements.
