abstract

Entanglement is a key feature of quantum mechanics, with applications in fields such as metrology, cryptography, quantum information, and quantum computation. It has been observed in a wide variety of systems and length scales, ranging from the microscopic to the macroscopic. However, entanglement remains largely unexplored at the highest accessible energy scales. Here we report the highest-energy observation of entanglement, in top$-$antitop quark events produced at the Large Hadron Collider, using a proton$-$proton collision dataset with a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV and an integrated luminosity of 140 fb$^{-1}$ recorded with the ATLAS experiment. Spin entanglement is detected from the measurement of a single observable $D$, inferred from the angle between the charged leptons in their parent top- and antitop-quark rest frames. The observable is measured in a narrow interval around the top$-$antitop quark production threshold, where the entanglement detection is expected to be significant. It is reported in a fiducial phase space defined with stable particles to minimize the uncertainties that stem from limitations of the Monte Carlo event generators and the parton shower model in modeling top-quark pair production. The entanglement marker is measured to be $D=-0.537 \pm 0.002~\text{(stat.)} \pm 0.019~\text{(syst.)}$ for $340 < m_{t\bar{t}} < 380$ GeV. The observed result is more than five standard deviations from a scenario without entanglement and constitutes the first observation of entanglement in a pair of quarks and the highest-energy observation of entanglement so far.

  1. Soft-Radiation-Induced Decoherence of Heavy-Quark Spin Entanglement at the Electron-Ion Collider

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Subleading soft-gluon recoil rotates the heavy-quark spin-correlation plane; tracing over unresolved radiation dephases in-plane coherences while protecting the normal-axis correlation.

  2. Experimental prospects for quantum decoherence measurements at colliders

    hep-ph 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Hard final-state radiation measurably destroys the spin entanglement of fermion-antifermion pairs, and the effect should already be visible in LHC ttbar+jet and Belle II tau+tau-gamma data.

  3. Experimental characterization of the hierarchy of quantum correlations in top quark pairs

    quant-ph 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

LHC top-quark data show quantum discord at >5σ, first evidence for steering at >3σ, no Bell correlations, and nonzero magic.

  4. Excluding Local Hidden Variables in $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$ Production: The Incompatibility with Angular-Momentum Conservation and CPT Invariance

    hep-ph 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Scalar h→ΛarΛ decay is incompatible with any angular-momentum-conserving LHVT, while pseudoscalar a→ΛarΛ can be mimicked by an LHVT only if CPT symmetry is relaxed.

  5. New physics in toponium's shadow?

    hep-ph 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Consistently including toponium bound-state effects inside the new-physics amplitude, not just the Standard Model one, reshapes the allowed mass–coupling region for a top-philic pseudoscalar near the top-antitop threshold.

  6. Bypassing Spin-Analyzing Power Dependence for Quantum Entanglement at Colliders: A Case Study of $\Lambda\bar{\Lambda}$

    hep-ph 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An entanglement witness for J/ψ→ΛΛ̄ built from angular-correlation ratios can certify entanglement without the parity-violating decay parameters, while angle-only ratio tests are shown to fail.

  7. Spin versus Magic: Lessons from Gluon and Graviton Scattering

    hep-th 2025-08 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

For 2 to 2 scattering of massless spin-1/2 to spin-2 particles, the averaged generated magic decreases monotonically with spin, with maxima well below the two-qubit upper bound.

  8. Topped baryons from QCD sum rules

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

QCD sum rules in HQET predict ground-state singly topped baryon masses near 174 GeV, some 1.1-1.5 GeV above the top quark pole mass.

In e+e−→ψ→Ξ(→Λπ)Ξ̄(→Λ̄π), the ΛΛ̄ pair's concurrence and negativity can decrease relative to the mother pair yet stay nonzero except at θ=0 and π, while quantum discord can always increase.
