The ringdown of perturbed black holes has been studied since the 1970s, but until recently, studies have focused on linear perturbations. There is now burgeoning interest in nonlinear perturbative effects during ringdown. Here, using a hyperboloidal framework, we provide a complete treatment of linear and quadratic quasinormal modes (QNMs and QQNMs) in second-order perturbation theory, in Schwarzschild spacetime. We include novel methods for extracting QNMs and QQNMs amplitudes using a Laplace transform treatment, allowing for the inclusion of arbitrary initial data. We produce both time- and frequency-domain codes. From these codes, we present new results further exploring the unforeseen dependence of QQNMs amplitudes on the parity of the progenitor system, as demonstrated in our letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 134, 061401 (2025)]. Our numerical results are restricted to perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole, but our methods extend straightforwardly to the astrophysically realistic case of a Kerr black hole.

  1. Probing Direct Waves in Black Hole Ringdowns

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Merger gravitational wave signals contain a 'direct wave' from the plunging companions, screened by the remnant's potential, with frequency near the superradiant value for high-spin remnants and SNR above 10 in GW1509...

  2. Perturbations of Plane Waves and Quadratic Quasinormal Modes on the Lightring

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Second-order gravitational perturbations on plane waves are solved with a GHP master equation and tensor harmonics, yielding quadratic quasinormal mode ratios and selection rules.

  3. Nonlinearities in Kerr Black Hole Ringdown from the Penrose Limit

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Kerr quadratic quasi-normal mode amplitudes and phases are computed analytically in the eikonal limit via the Penrose limit, giving an explicit spin-dependent nonlinearity ratio.

  4. GW250114 reveals black hole horizon signatures

    gr-qc 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The merger signal of GW250114 contains a residual 'direct wave' component whose frequency and damping match the remnant horizon's rotation frequency and surface gravity.

  5. The AdS Perspective on the Nonlinear Tails in Black Hole Ringdown

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

The known t^{-(2L+2)} nonlinear ringdown tail is rederived via AdS2 x S2, with a proposed but incorrectly normalized Aretakis amplitude relation.
