The effective action for QED in curved spacetime includes equivalence principle violating interactions between the electromagnetic field and the spacetime curvature. These interactions admit the possibility of superluminal yet causal photon propagation in gravitational fields. In this paper, we extend our analysis of photon propagation in gravitational backgrounds to the Kerr spacetime describing a rotating black hole. The results support two general theorems -- a polarisation sum rule and a `horizon theorem'. The implications for the stationary limit surface bounding the ergosphere are also discussed.

  1. Degenerate higher-order Maxwell-Einstein theories

    gr-qc 2025-02 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A complete classification of quadratic degenerate Maxwell-Einstein theories is given, including a new theory that generalizes Horndeski's non-minimal coupling to gauge fields.

  2. Analytical Study of Deflection Angle and Time Delay in Kerr Spacetime with Modified Propagation

    gr-qc 2026-07 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

The paper asserts analytic strong-lensing deflection and time-delay formulas for Kerr black holes with Weyl-modified photon propagation, but the derivation is incomplete and internally inconsistent.

  3. Polarization-Dependent Photon Propagation, Quasinormal Modes, and Gravitational Lensing in Higher-Curvature Effective Theories

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Higher-curvature corrections induce polarization-dependent effective metrics for photons that shift photon spheres, alter eikonal quasinormal modes, and modify deflection angles in static spherically symmetric backgrounds.
