There are two mass generating mechanisms in the standard model of particle physics (SM). One is related to the Higgs boson and fairly well understood. The other is embedded in quantum chromodynamics (QCD), the SM's strong interaction piece; and although responsible for emergence of the roughly 1 GeV mass scale that characterises the proton and hence all observable matter, the source and impacts of this emergent hadronic mass (EHM) remain puzzling. As bound states seeded by a valence-quark and -antiquark, pseudoscalar mesons present a simpler problem in quantum field theory than that associated with the nucleon. Consequently, there is a large array of robust predictions for pion and kaon properties whose empirical validation will provide a clear window onto many effects of both mass generating mechanisms and the constructive interference between them. This has now become significant because new-era experimental facilities, in operation, construction, or planning, are capable of conducting such tests and thereby contributing greatly to resolving the puzzles of EHM. These aspects of experiment, phenomenology, and theory, along with contemporary successes and challenges, are sketched herein, simultaneously highlighting the potential gains that can accrue from a coherent effort aimed at finally reaching an understanding of the character and structure of Nature's Nambu-Goldstone modes.

  1. Pion Distribution Amplitudes from Functional QCD

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The pion DA computed from functional QCD via LaMET has ⟨ξ²⟩_π = 0.267 (no quoted error), consistent with sum rules and DSE/BSE and 0.8σ below the lattice-LaMET value 0.300(41).

  2. Toward precise $\xi$ gauge fixing for the lattice QCD

    hep-lat 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

An empirical precision-extrapolation method reproduces the ξ-dependent RI/MOM renormalization constants of quark bilinear operators on the lattice to 0.2-0.3% for ξ up to 1.

  3. Feasibility Study of Pion and Kaon Structure via the Sullivan Process at EicC

    hep-ex 2025-12 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

EicC could measure pion and kaon structure functions via the Sullivan process with statistical uncertainties below 5% (pion) and 8% (kaon) in most kinematic bins, according to Monte Carlo projections.

  4. Off-shell modifications of the pion generalized parton distributions and transverse momentum dependent parton distributions

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

In the NJL model, off-shell pion GPDs and TMDs differ from on-shell ones by 15 to 25 percent and acquire new odd-power form factors from broken crossing symmetry.

  5. Anomalies, Topology, and Hadron Structure in QCD

    hep-ph 2026-06 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

A review unifying the QCD axial and trace anomalies with vacuum topology, arguing that the proton spin puzzle and the U(1)_A problem are both controlled by topological screening encoded in the susceptibility slope χ′(0).

  6. Electroexcitation of Nucleon Resonances and the Emergence of Hadron Mass

    hep-ph 2025-05 conditional novelty 2.0 of 10

A review argues that Jefferson Lab electroproduction data on nucleon resonances, analyzed with continuum Schwinger methods, confirm a momentum-dependent dressed quark mass, the essence of emergent hadron mass.
