Many theories of nonlinear electrodynamics (NLED) that have been proposed in physical contexts involving strong fields are causal for weak fields but acausal for strong fields. We show that for any such theory there is a unique causal and self-dual (electromagnetic duality invariant) theory with the same Lagrangian at zero magnetic field. This follows from a construction of the general causal self-dual NLED, which shows that strong-field causality is implied by weak-field causality for self-dual theories. We illustrate our results with explicit examples.

  1. On regular black string spacetimes in nonlinear electrodynamics

    gr-qc 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

No regular purely electric black strings exist in NED recovering the Maxwell limit, but regular cylindrical Bardeen and Hayward analogues are constructed with finite curvature.

  2. Courant-Hilbert deformations of Yang-Baxter sigma models

    hep-th 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Yang-Baxter and Courant-Hilbert deformations combine inside 4D Chern-Simons theory: the corrected action equals the master Lagrangian plus half the trace of the energy-momentum tensor.

  3. Root-$T\bar{T}$ Flows Unify 4D Duality-Invariant Electrodynamics and 2D Integrable Sigma Models

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A single generating function encodes both 4D self-dual nonlinear electrodynamics and 2D integrable sigma models, and newly defined gamma flows preserve the root-T Tbar equation across generalized Born-Infeld, logarith...
