abstract

We study time dependent correlation functions in hot quantum and classical field theory for the $\lambda\phi^4$ case. We set up the classical analogue of thermal field theory and make a direct comparison between the quantum and classical diagrams. A restriction to time independent correlation functions gives the connection with conventional dimensional reduction. If the parameters in the classical theory are chosen according to the dimensional reduction matching relations, the classical expressions are cutoff independent and they approximate the quantum expressions, provided that the external momenta and frequencies are small with respect to the temperature.

  1. Seeded bubble nucleation on the lattice

    hep-lat 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 8.0 of 10

First non-perturbative lattice computation of seeded bubble nucleation rate in the cubic anisotropy model agrees with semi-classical EFT prediction on domain walls including fluctuation determinant.

  2. Dynamics of nucleation in thermal phase transitions

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The thermal nucleation rate is the transition-state estimate multiplied by one minus the re-crossing probability, and oscillons make that correction large.

  3. Quantum tunnelling, real-time dynamics and Picard-Lefschetz thimbles

    hep-th 2019-09 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A generalized-thimble evaluation of the closed-time path integral reproduces Schrödinger-equation tunnelling dynamics in a double well, while the classical-statistical approximation deviates.

  4. Testing nucleation calculations for strong phase transitions

    hep-lat 2025-02 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A nonperturbative lattice calculation finds that perturbative bubble nucleation rates in a tree-level barrier scalar theory agree only qualitatively, with |log Γ| off by 20% at one loop and 100% at tree level.
