Recently a mass deformation of the maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills quantum mechanics has been constructed from the supermembrane action in eleven dimensional plane-wave backgrounds. However, the origin of this plane-wave matrix theory in terms of a compactification of a higher dimensional Super Yang-Mills model has remained obscure. In this paper we study the Kaluza-Klein reduction of D=4, N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory on a round three-sphere, and demonstrate that the plane-wave matrix theory arises through a consistent truncation to the lowest lying modes. We further explore the relation between the dilatation operator of the conformal field theory and the hamiltonian of the quantum mechanics through perturbative calculations up to two-loop order. In particular we find that the one-loop anomalous dimensions of pure scalar operators are completely captured by the plane-wave matrix theory. At two-loop level this property ceases to exist.

  1. Two roads to fortuity in ABJM theory

    hep-th 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Enumerates 244 fortuitous operators in ABJM theory and identifies a truncation matching the BMN subsector of N=4 SYM to lift an infinite tower of representatives.

  2. Probing Non-Graviton Spectra in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM via BMN truncation and S-Duality

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The BMN index of N=4 SYM contains universal non-graviton bosonic towers, and the S-duality mismatch between SO(7) and Sp(3) pinpoints a non-graviton cohomology.

  3. Mass-Flow Invariance of $Q$-Cohomology in BMN Matrix Quantum Mechanics

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Q-cohomology in BMN matrix QM is mass-flow invariant via a similarity transformation of the nilpotent supercharge component.

  4. Finite-$N$ BMN index across all vacuum sectors

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Finite-N BMN index summed over all vacuum sectors for N≤9 reveals order-N² entropy growth that survives the sum and dominance switching from single- to double-partition sectors starting at N=5.

  5. Fuzzy Black Holes from Mass Generation in Matrix Compactification

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Compactifying BFSS on T^3 with mixed fermion boundary conditions yields a mass-deformed theory whose fuzzy-sphere plus fermion configurations are proposed as Schwarzschild black holes with entropy S∼N.

  6. BPS Non-Renormalization in the BMN Matrix Model

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Conjugation deformations preserve normalizability in the BMN matrix model, implying BPS states do not lift and their unsigned number is invariant except at the free and BFSS points.
