We investigate the hypothesis that the higher-derivative corrections always make extremal non-supersymmetric black holes lighter than the classical bound and self-repulsive. This hypothesis was recently formulated in the context of the so-called swampland program. One of our examples involves an extremal heterotic black hole in four dimensions. We also calculate the effect of general four-derivative terms in Maxwell-Einstein theories in D dimensions. The results are consistent with the conjecture.

  1. Running Love Numbers and the Effective Field Theory of Gravity

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Higher-derivative gravity corrections induce non-zero, classically running tidal Love numbers for black holes, computed here with a new tidal Green function method.

  2. The Black Hole Weak Gravity Conjecture with Multiple Charges

    hep-th 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

For Einstein-Maxwell with N U(1) gauge fields, the one-loop logarithmic running of four-derivative Wilson coefficients forces the extremality form to become positive at large charge, so large extremal black holes can ...

  3. Higher-Derivative Corrections to Reissner--Nordstr\"om Black Holes from Worldline QFT

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

RF² corrections to RN black holes are computed via worldline QFT, verified exactly in G, and shown to require the weak gravity conjecture for non-negative extremal temperature.

  4. A Thermodynamic Positivity Bound on Higher-Derivative 3-Form Couplings in de Sitter, and its Inflationary Consequences

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Thermodynamic positivity of black hole entropy yields a new constraint on higher-derivative 3-form couplings, which in turn restricts viable 3-form inflation models.

  5. Causality Constraints on Black Hole Thermodynamics in Nonlinear Electrodynamics

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Causality in nonlinear electrodynamics forces the entropy-to-mass-squared ratio of black holes to decrease with mass and the extremal mass-to-charge ratio to increase with charge.

  6. Multicenter higher-derivative BPS black holes

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Two- and three-charge BPS black holes of the torus-reduced heterotic action are rewritten in five-dimensional STU supergravity fields, and the resulting action is shown to differ from known N=2 R^2 invariants.

  7. ISCOs and the weak gravity conjecture bound in higher derivative theories of gravity

    hep-th 2024-04 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Derives WGC bound on probe charge-to-mass ratio from positivity of anomalous dimensions in dual CFT for charged particles in higher-derivative AdS black holes, with bound increasing with couplings and ISCOs existing u...

  8. Thermodynamics of 4D Dilatonic Black Holes and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

    hep-th 2019-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Higher-derivative corrections make extremal dilatonic black holes superextremal (charge-to-mass ratio greater than one) in all solvable cases, matching the weak gravity conjecture.

  9. On Charged Black Holes in Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell Theory

    gr-qc 2025-05 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

In Einstein-Weyl-Maxwell gravity, adding charge splits the neutral black hole branches into a non-RN family and an RN-like family, and the RN-like near-extremal limit has charge-to-mass ratio below 1.

  10. Causality bounds from charged shockwaves in 5d

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Causality on 5d charged shockwaves gives positivity bounds on four-derivative Einstein-Maxwell couplings, with gravity weakening the pure-field-theory bounds and near-horizon photons providing the strongest constraints.

  11. Quantum Corrections and Extremality: A Generalized Universal Relation

    hep-th 2025-04 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

For any entropy function S(r_h), the Goon-Penco extremality ratio equals d(pi r_h^2)/dS, so the original relation survives only for the area law.
