These notes present a pedagogical introduction to magnetic monopoles and exact electromagnetic duality in supersymmetric gauge theories. They are based on lectures given at the 1995 Trieste Summer School in High Energy Physics and Cosmology and at the 1995 Busstepp Summer School at Cosener's House.

  1. Anomaly mediation in Seiberg-Witten theories

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 6.5 of 10

AMSB on SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theories matches the N=1 SW deformation only perturbatively; nonperturbative effects force different condensates and a vacuum shift across the strong-coupling scale without a phase transition.

  2. Self-dual monopole loops, instantons and confinement

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Interactions among self-dual monopole-like constituents of instantons remove the infrared divergence and, the authors conjecture, drive confinement in 4d Yang-Mills.

  3. More on 8d non-supersymmetric branes and heterotic strings

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The E8 non-supersymmetric heterotic string on T^2 has exactly 22 maximal gauge enhancements, found by two independent methods, with massless spectra listed for each.

  4. Spectral Networks: Bridging higher-rank Teichm\"uller theory and BPS states

    math-ph 2024-11 unverdicted

A comprehensive introduction to spectral networks that develops higher-rank Teichmüller theory in parallel with class S gauge theory and BPS spectra.
