Observations of highly inclined disks with ALMA. Results from 12CO gas and continuum observations

\'Alvaro Ribas, Christophe Pinte, Fran\c{c}ois M\'enard, Gaspard Duch\^ene, Karl R. Stapelfeldt, Laurine Martinien, Marion Villenave

Most highly inclined protoplanetary disks show gas extending farther out than dust at both micron and millimeter scales.

Claims

C1strongest claim

The majority of disks in our sample (11 out of 14) follow Rgas > Rdust, micron > Rdust,mm. Most disks follow Hgas > Hdust,mm. We found an anti-correlation between the dynamical mass and the aspect ratio.

C2weakest assumption

That the measured radial and vertical extents from moment maps and images accurately reflect intrinsic physical sizes after accounting for optical depth effects, projection in inclined systems, and that PV diagrams yield reliable dynamical masses under Keplerian assumptions.

C3one line summary

In 14 highly inclined disks, gas extends farther than micron dust which extends farther than mm dust radially, with vertical settling of mm dust and dynamical masses anti-correlated with aspect ratio.
