We perform a meta-study of recently published Redshift Space Distortion (RSD) measurements of the cosmological growth rate, f(z) \sigma_8(z). We analyse the latest results from the 6dFGS, BOSS, LRG, WiggleZ and VIPERS galaxy redshift surveys, and compare the measurements to expectations from Planck. In this Letter we point out that the RSD measurements are consistently lower than the values expected from Planck, and the relative scatter between the RSD measurements is lower than expected. A full resolution of this issue may require a more robust treatment of non-linear effects in RSD models, although the trend for a low \sigma_8 agrees with recent constraints on \sigma_8 and \Omega_m from Sunyaev-Zeldovich cluster counts identified in Planck.

  1. Dark Matter with a Drag at Low Redshift

    astro-ph.CO 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

iDCDM adds two parameters to LambdaCDM so that dark matter decay produces late-time interacting radiation, yielding a distinctive low-redshift suppression of structure growth while leaving BBN and primary CMB unchanged.

  2. Cosmological framework for renormalization group extended gravity at the action level

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Renormalization group corrections to gravity are applied at the action level to cosmology, yielding a constant gravitational slip and a low-redshift f sigma8 modification that may ease the sigma8 tension.

  3. Signatures of Modified Gravity on Linear Scales in a Dynamical Dark Energy Background

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Using Planck, DESI, supernovae, and redshift-space distortions, the authors infer that modified gravity, if present, must act only below ~30 Mpc and cannot modify the large scales previously considered.

  4. Illustrating the consequences of a misuse of $\sigma_8$ in cosmology

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Cosmologists should compare clustering amplitude with the h-independent statistic sigma_12 instead of sigma_8, because sigma_8's smoothing scale shifts with H0 and artificially worsens the growth tension in high-H0 models.

  5. Decoupling perturbations from background in $f(Q)$ gravity: the square-root correction and the impact on the $\sigma_8$ tension

    astro-ph.CO 2025-12 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A sqrt(Q) correction in f(Q) gravity suppresses structure growth without altering the expansion history; fitted to RSD/DESI data it can bring sigma8 into agreement with Planck, at the cost of a sigma8-M degeneracy.

  6. Mass-Temperature relation in $\Lambda$CDM and modified gravity

    astro-ph.CO 2019-08 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A semianalytic ΛCDM cluster model with angular momentum, dynamical friction, and external pressure produces a mass-temperature relation that mimics f(R) and symmetron predictions, weakening the MTR as a gravity probe.
