Massive (hypermassive and supramassive) neutron stars are likely to be often formed after the merger of binary neutron stars. We explore the evolution process of the remnant massive neutron stars and gravitational waves emitted by them, based on numerical-relativity simulations for binary neutron star mergers employing a variety of equations of state and choosing a plausible range of the neutron-star mass of binaries. We show that the lifetime of remnant hypermassive neutron stars depends strongly on the total binary mass and also on the equations of state. Gravitational waves emitted by the remnant massive neutron stars universally have a quasiperiodic nature of an approximately constant frequency although the frequency varies with time. We also show that the frequency and time-variation feature of gravitational waves depend strongly on the equations of state. We derive a fitting formula for the quasiperiodic gravitational waveforms, which may be used for the data analysis of a gravitational-wave signal.

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A phase-coherent time-domain model for kilohertz postmerger gravitational waves from neutron star remnants is introduced, with injection studies indicating postmerger detection at SNR around 8.5 and radius constraints...

  2. Inferring Neutron Star Nuclear Properties from Gravitational-Wave and Gamma-Ray Burst Observations

    astro-ph.HE 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

By matching LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA merger rates to gamma-ray burst rates, the authors infer that the dividing mass between short and long bursts is about 1.36 times the maximum neutron star mass.

  3. Thermodynamics conditions of matter in the neutrino decoupling region during neutron star mergers

    astro-ph.HE 2019-08 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

In neutron star merger remnants, neutrinos decouple at densities around 10^11 g/cm^3 for average energies, while heavy-flavor neutrinos freeze out of equilibrium deeper, at several times 10^12 g/cm^3.

  4. Neutrino pair annihilation driven jets from black-hole torus systems

    astro-ph.HE 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Neutrino pair annihilation in black hole-torus systems launches relativistic fireballs with isotropic energies up to about 10^51 erg and durations around 0.1 s, which can account for faint short GRBs and GRB precursors.
