Kolya Uraltsev was one of the inventors of the Heavy Quark Expansion (HQE), that describes inclusive weak decays of hadrons containing heavy quarks and in particular lifetimes. Besides giving a pedagogic introduction to the subject, we review the development and the current status of the HQE, which just recently passed several non-trivial experimental tests with an unprecedented precision. In view of many new experimental results for lifetimes of heavy hadrons, we also update several theory predictions: $\tau (B^+) / \tau (B_d) = 1.04^{+0.05}_{-0.01} \pm 0.02 \pm 0.01$, $\tau (B_s) / \tau (B_d) = 1.001 \pm 0.002$, $\tau (\Lambda_b)/ \tau (B_d) = 0.935 \pm 0.054$ and $\bar {\tau} (\Xi_b^0) / \bar{\tau} (\Xi_b^+) = 0.95 \pm 0.06$. The theoretical precision is currently strongly limited by the unknown size of the non-perturbative matrix elements of four-quark operators, which could be determined with lattice simulations.

    hep-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0

Complete NLO QCD corrections to charmless inclusive non-leptonic B-decay widths are computed for the full BSM operator set, yielding 26 constrained directions in Wilson coefficient space.

  2. Predictions for $b$-baryon lifetimes at NNLO-QCD

    hep-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0

NNLO-QCD corrections to the free b-quark decay and NLO corrections to dimension-five operators reduce uncertainties in HQE predictions for b-baryon lifetimes, yielding excellent agreement with experiment.

  3. New Predictions for the Lifetimes of Doubly Heavy Baryons and the $B_c$ Meson

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Updated lifetime predictions for doubly heavy baryons and B_c meson with NNLO and NLO corrections in MS-bar, kinetic, and Upsilon mass schemes, including new hierarchies for bc states.

  4. Revisiting lifetimes of doubly charmed baryons

    hep-ph 2023-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Updated predictions within the heavy quark expansion confirm the lifetime hierarchy τ(Ξ_cc^+) < τ(Ω_cc^+) < τ(Ξ_cc^++) with τ(Ξ_cc^++) = 0.32 ± 0.05 +0.08/-0.07 ps matching LHCb data and provide ratios for the other states.
