The last ten years have opened up a new parameter space in time-domain astronomy with the discovery of transients defying our understanding of how stars explode. These extremes of the transient paradigm represent the brightest - called superluminous supernova - and the fastest - known as fast, blue optical transients - of the transient zoo. The number of their discoveries and information gained per event have witnessed an exponential growth that has benefited observational and theoretical studies. The collected dataset and the understanding of such events have surpassed any initial expectation and opened up a future exploding with potential, spanning from novel tools of high-redshift cosmological investigation to new insights into the final stages of massive stars. Here, the observational properties of extreme supernovae are reviewed and put in the context of their physics, possible progenitor scenarios and explosion mechanisms.

  1. AT2019ijn: a fast-rising, slow-decaying blue optical transient with exceptionally bright radio emission

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

AT2019ijn combines LFBOT-like fast optical rise and blue color with slow decay and radio luminosity peaking late at 2e31 erg/s/Hz, best fit as an off-axis jetted IMBH TDE.

  2. Implications of the UV/optical Plateau of AT2018cow

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A wind-and-irradiation disk model fits the AT2018cow UV plateau with accretor masses from 1.4 to ~100 solar masses, removing the need for a >200 solar-mass black hole.

  3. Insights from Modeling Magnetar-driven Light Curves of Stripped-envelope Supernovae

    astro-ph.HE 2024-12 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

A unified magnetar spin-down model reproduces the bolometric light curves of 11 stripped-envelope supernovae, but several reported correlations follow from the fitting formulas rather than from independent physics.
