abstract

It is common to express cosmological measurements in units of $h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$. Here, we review some of the complications that originate from this practice. A crucial problem caused by these units is related to the normalization of the matter power spectrum, which is commonly characterized in terms of the linear-theory rms mass fluctuation in spheres of radius $8\,h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$, $\sigma_8$. This parameter does not correctly capture the impact of $h$ on the amplitude of density fluctuations. We show that the use of $\sigma_8$ has caused critical misconceptions for both the so-called $\sigma_8$ tension regarding the consistency between low-redshift probes and cosmic microwave background data, and the way in which growth-rate estimates inferred from redshift-space distortions are commonly expressed. We propose to abandon the use of $h^{-1}{\rm Mpc}$ units in cosmology and to characterize the amplitude of the matter power spectrum in terms of $\sigma_{12}$, defined as the mass fluctuation in spheres of radius $12\,{\rm Mpc}$, whose value is similar to the standard $\sigma_8$ for $h\sim 0.67$.

  1. $\Lambda$CDM and early dark energy in latent space: a data-driven parametrization of the CMB temperature power spectrum

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A variational autoencoder compresses CMB temperature spectra into 5 (LambdaCDM) or 8 (with early dark energy) latent parameters that reconstruct the data within Planck errors and can be constrained with Planck observations.

  2. Boosting galaxy clustering analyses with non-perturbative modelling of redshift-space distortions

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A redshift-space distortion model that keeps the velocity damping function non-perturbative extends the usable scale range and improves cosmological parameter constraints by 20 to 50 percent on Stage-IV-like mocks.

  3. Signatures of Modified Gravity on Linear Scales in a Dynamical Dark Energy Background

    astro-ph.CO 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Using Planck, DESI, supernovae, and redshift-space distortions, the authors infer that modified gravity, if present, must act only below ~30 Mpc and cannot modify the large scales previously considered.

  4. Illustrating the consequences of a misuse of $\sigma_8$ in cosmology

    astro-ph.CO 2025-01 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Cosmologists should compare clustering amplitude with the h-independent statistic sigma_12 instead of sigma_8, because sigma_8's smoothing scale shifts with H0 and artificially worsens the growth tension in high-H0 models.
