abstract

In core-collapse supernovae or compact binary merger remnants, neutrino-neutrino refraction can spawn fast pair conversion of the type $\nu_e \bar\nu_e \leftrightarrow \nu_x \bar\nu_x$ (with $x=\mu, \tau$), governed by the angle-dependent density matrices of flavor lepton number. In a homogeneous and axially symmetric two-flavor system, all angle modes evolve coherently, and we show that the nonlinear equations of motion are formally equivalent to those of a gyroscopic pendulum. Within this analogy, our main innovation is to identify the elusive characteristic of the lepton-number angle distribution that determines the depth of conversion with the "pendulum spin." The latter is given by the real part of the eigenfrequency resulting from the linear normal-mode analysis of the neutrino system. This simple analogy allows one to predict the depth of flavor conversion without solving the nonlinear evolution equations. Our approach provides a novel diagnostic tool to explore the physics of nonlinear systems.

Neutrino fast flavor instabilities are equivalent to stimulated emission of flavomons, quantum flavor waves, whose kinetic equations reproduce the linear growth rate and extend naturally beyond it.

Nearby neutrino flavor conversion in a supernova can boost νp-process yields of p-nuclides like 92Mo and 92Nb by up to two orders of magnitude, matching solar abundances when conversion starts within ~10 km of the pro...

  3. Single-wave solutions of the neutrino fast flavor system. Part II. Weak instabilities and their resonant behavior

    hep-ph 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For shallow angular crossings, the nonlinear evolution of a single-wave fast flavor instability is a flavor pendulum whose amplitude and period are set by the linear growth rate.

  4. Single-wave solutions of the neutrino fast flavor system. Part I. Mechanical properties

    hep-ph 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Single-wave neutrino flavor solutions form a non-integrable spin system without Gaudin invariants, so an exact flavor pendulum exists only for two beams and does not extend to continuous angle distributions.

  5. Electron-neutrino lepton number crossings: Variations with the supernova core physics

    astro-ph.HE 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

In a suite of 12 supernova models, electron-neutrino lepton number crossings appear at larger radii when proto-neutron star convection is included and at smaller radii when muon production is included.
