We review the current state of research on electromagnetic probes in the context of heavy-ion collisions. The focus is on thermal photons and dileptons which provide unique insights into the properties of the created hot and dense matter. This review is intended to provide an introductory overview of the topic as well as a discussion of recent theoretical and experimental results. In particular, we discuss the role of vector-meson spectral functions in the calculation of photon and dilepton rates and present recent results obtained from different frameworks. Furthermore, we will highlight the special role of photons and dileptons to provide information on observables such as the temperature, the lifetime, the polarization and the electrical conductivity of the produced medium as well as their use to learn about chiral symmetry restoration and phase transitions.

Direct-photon production in inelastic and high-multiplicity proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV
First measurement of low-pT direct photons in 13 TeV pp collisions, showing a 3.2 sigma signal in inelastic and a 1.9 sigma hint in high-multiplicity events, with yield rising with multiplicity.

Renormalization-Group Invariant Parity-Doublet Model for Nuclear and Neutron-Star Matter
Including baryonic vacuum fluctuations in the parity-doublet model through an RG-invariant mean-field scheme moves the chiral transition to higher densities and turns it into a smooth crossover for most values of the ...

Effective temperatures of the QGP from thermal photon and dilepton production
In the Trajectum model, dilepton effective temperatures reliably track the quark-gluon plasma temperature, while photon effective temperatures are biased by flow and stay near 250-300 MeV.

Thermal dilepton production within conformal viscous Gubser flow
Thermal dilepton yields and effective temperatures are computed for conformal viscous Gubser flow, showing larger yields for lower q (larger systems) and higher effective temperatures for smaller systems.
