abstract

We revisit 6d (2,0) SCFTs of type $D_N$ and their realization in M-theory, focusing on absolute variants of these theories and on their global finite 0- and 2-form symmetries. We derive the 7d SymTFT capturing these global symmetries from M-theory, both from the point of view of the low-energy supergravity action on $AdS_7\times \mathbb{RP}^4$ and from M2- and M5-branes giving rise to its topological operators. Along the way, results by Gukov, Hsin, and Pei are extended by keeping track of an additional 7d $\mathbb Z_2$ gauge field, associated to the outer automorphism of the $D_N$ algebra. In particular, we find an interplay of non-invertible symmetries and mixed anomalies for absolute 6d (2,0) $D_{4k}$ SCFTs with $k\ge 1$. We highlight several subtle points related to the non-orientability of $\mathbb{RP}^4$, the half-integral $G_4$-flux that threads it, and the non-commutativity of fluxes. All these also play an essential role in a holographic derivation of the anomaly polynomial of 6d (2,0) $D_N$ SCFTs.

  1. Non-Abelian Symmetry Operators from Hanging Branes in $AdS_5 \times S^5$

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In AdS5×S5, non-Abelian SO(6) symmetry operators are realized by hanging D5-brane–KK-monopole bound states, matching the Gauss-law operators from the low-energy supergravity action.

  2. Anomaly Matching in 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ SCFTs from M5 Cobordism

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

M5 bordism classifies the invertible phases of 6d (2,0) anomaly theories, and the Hopf-Wess-Zumino term is the phase that transgresses to the second Pontryagin class.

  3. Continuous symmetries and charge measurement of boundary operators in holography

    hep-th 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Continuous symmetry operators in holography are U-shaped hanging brane bound states (D5-KK in Type IIB, M5-KK in M-theory) whose worldvolume couplings reproduce the Gauss-law symmetry operators and measure charges of ...

  4. Holography and discrete theta angles for disconnected gauge groups

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper derives missing torsion terms in the holographic symmetry TFT for so(2n) N=4 SYM and matches its gapped boundary conditions to the global forms and discrete theta angles of disconnected orthogonal gauge theories.
