abstract
A dark energy with a negative energy density in the past can simultaneously address various cosmological tensions, and if it is to be positive today to drive the observed acceleration of the universe, we show that it should have a pole in its equation of state parameter. More precisely, in a spatially uniform universe, a perfect fluid (submitting to the usual continuity equation of local energy conservation) whose energy density $\rho(z)$ vanishes at an isolated zero $z=z_p$, necessarily has a pole in its equation of state parameter $w(z)$ at $z_p$, and, $w(z)$ diverges to positive infinity in the limit $z\to z_p^+$ and it diverges to negative infinity in the limit $z\to z_p^-$ -- we assume that $z_p$ is not an accumulation point for poles of $w(z)$. However, the converse statement that this kind of a pole of $w(z)$ corresponds to a vanishing energy density at that point is not true as we show by a counterexample. An immediate implication of this result is that one should be hesitant to observationally reconstruct the equation of state parameter of the dark energy directly, and rather infer it from a directly reconstructed dark energy density.

Defocusing dark energy: Raychaudhuri diagnostics beyond $w<-1/3$ and the phantom divide
For sign-changing effective dark energy, smooth negative-to-positive density crossings make ρ+3p and ρ+p the correct diagnostics, give w=p/ρ a universal pole n(1+z†)/3, and force repulsion onset z_rep>z† while ρ<0.

Alleviating the Hubble Tension with Smooth Sign-Switching Dark Energy: Full CMB Constraints with DESI and PantheonPlus
Smooth ECDM dark energy remains compatible with Planck+ACT+SPT, DESI DR2 and Pantheon+/SH0ES while alleviating the Hubble tension through a controlled late-time density transition.

BAO miscalibration cannot rescue late-time solutions to the Hubble tension
Even after rescaling BAO data to prefer H0≈73 km/s/Mpc, none of six tested late-time dark-energy models can resolve the Hubble tension once unanchored SNeIa and CMB geometry are included.

Dark Energy Crosses the Line: Quantifying and Testing the Evidence for Phantom Crossing
Using CPL fits to six data combinations, the paper finds 3.1-5.2 sigma preference for a phantom-to-quintessence crossing of the dark energy equation of state, and shows that modified non-crossing models generally fit ...

Updated Constraints on Omnipotent Dark Energy: A Comprehensive Analysis with CMB and BAO Data
Updated constraints on the DMS20 dark energy model from CMB, BAO, and Pantheon+ data keep it consistent with Lambda CDM while generically producing two phantom-divide crossings; the H0 tension is reduced only with enl...
