abstract

Early data from JWST have revealed a bevy of high-redshift galaxy candidates with unexpectedly high stellar masses. An immediate concern is the consistency of these candidates with galaxy formation in the standard cosmological model. In the $\Lambda$CDM paradigm, the stellar mass ($M_\star$) of a galaxy is limited by the available baryonic reservoir of its host dark matter halo. The mass function of dark matter halos therefore imposes an absolute upper limit on the number density $n(>M_\star,z)$ and stellar mass density $\rho_{\star}(>M_\star,z)$ of galaxies more massive than $M_\star$ at any epoch $z$. Here I show that the most massive galaxy candidates in JWST observations at $z\sim 7-10$ lie at the very edge of these limits, indicating an important unresolved issue with the properties of galaxies derived from the observations, how galaxies form at early times in $\Lambda$CDM, or within this standard cosmology itself.

  1. Ab Initio Cosmological Simulations: From Inflation to Present-Day Structure Formation

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Nonlinear axion-U(1) inflation, simulated on a lattice and fed into N-body simulations, boosts small-scale structure and high-redshift halo counts by up to ~200% relative to standard single-field initial conditions.

  2. Revisiting Metastable Dark Energy in Light of DESI DR2 BAO and DESI DR1 Full-Shape Measurements

    astro-ph.CO 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Metastable dark energy, where the vacuum energy decays at a constant rate, fits the data but is not required: some combinations show 2-3 sigma hints of decay, none decisively beats the cosmological constant.

  3. Bright Galaxies at Cosmic Dawn: A Cloud-Scale Star Formation Model Unifying Variable SFE, IMFs, and Stochasticity

    astro-ph.GA 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A cloud-based semi-analytic model shows that a top-heavy stellar initial mass function and a cloud-property-dependent star-formation efficiency, rather than cloud mass or density, most strongly shape the UV luminosity...

  4. Large deviations for halos and voids: beyond perturbative non-gaussianities

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Excursion-set halo and void abundances are derived for exponential-tailed non-Gaussian fluctuations, giving new first-passage-time formulas and a void-size-function series.

  5. Early Galaxies from Rare Inflationary Processes and JWST Observations

    astro-ph.CO 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Rare Poisson processes during inflation can seed dense regions that collapse into massive galaxies at redshifts where standard cosmology predicts almost none, and JWST could detect them.

  6. Endpoint Logarithms in the NLO Mueller-Navelet Jet Vertex: Threshold Matching and BLM/MOM Prescription Sensitivity

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

A conservative BFKL-aware threshold matching scheme is constructed for the NLO forward jet vertex that resums ordinary endpoint logs, preserves NLO accuracy, and is tested against CMS azimuthal observables, showing in...

  7. Probing inflationary features with galaxy ultraviolet luminosity function observables

    astro-ph.CO 2026-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Galaxy UV luminosity function data at z=6–9 give upper limits on bump-like inflationary features at k≈0.3–20 Mpc^-1, similar to but not stronger than optical-depth constraints.

  8. Dark Secrets of Baryons: Illuminating Dark Matter-Baryon Interactions with JWST

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

JWST ultraviolet luminosity function data currently provide the strongest upper limits on velocity-dependent (∝v^{-2}) dark matter–proton scattering for sub-GeV dark matter.

  9. Comparison of $R_h=ct$ and $\Lambda$CDM using DESI DR1 measurements

    astro-ph.CO 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Using DESI DR1 distance measurements, flat LambdaCDM is decisively preferred over R_h=ct, driven almost entirely by the Lyman-alpha data point at redshift 2.33.
