We examine aspects of locality in perturbative quantum gravity and how information can be localized in subregions. In the framework of AdS/CFT, we consider the algebra of single-trace operators defined in a short time band. We conjecture that, if the state has large energy variance, then this algebra will have a commutant in the 1/N expansion. We provide evidence for this by identifying operators that commute with the conformal field theory Hamiltonian to all orders in 1/N, thus resolving an apparent tension with the gravitational Gauss law. The bulk interpretation is that these operators are gravitationally dressed with respect to features of the state rather than the boundary. We comment on observables in certain black hole microstates and the gravitational dressing in the island proposal.

  1. Symmetric Product Orbifold Universality and the Mirage of an Emergent Spacetime

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Symmetric product orbifolds have large-N thermal correlators identical to BTZ, undercutting the claim that a type III1 von Neumann algebra implies a sharp emergent horizon.

  2. Cosmological correlators in gravitationally-constrained de Sitter states

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Cosmological correlators in gravitationally constrained de Sitter states are conformally invariant and differ from QFT vacuum correlators, but relational observables with a heavy background state can reproduce QFT results.

  3. An apologia for islands

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Entanglement islands and Page curves can arise in massless gravity without an external bath, and compactly supported gauge-invariant operators exist in islands around generic symmetry-breaking black hole backgrounds.

  4. On the Underlying Nonrelativistic Nature of Relativistic Holography

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Standard AdS/CFT duality is reinterpreted as D-brane/black-brane duality in nonrelativistic D3-brane theory, with AdS5×S5 as a relativistic bubble in flat 3-Newton-Cartan geometry.
