We study some aspects of open string theories on D-branes with critical electric fields. We show that the massless open string modes that move in the direction of the electric field decouple. In the 1+1 dimensional case the dual theory is U(N) SYM with electric flux, and the decoupling of massless open strings is dual to the decoupling of the U(1) degrees of freedom. We also show that, if the direction along the electric field is compact, then there are finite energy winding closed string modes. They are dual to Higgs branch excitations of the SYM theory, and their energetics works accordingly. These properties provide new non-trivial evidence for the duality.

  1. Holography with Null Boundaries

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

D1-D5-F1 string theory in a non-commutative decoupling limit yields a holographic correspondence for spacetimes with a null boundary, interpolating between AdS3 and a six-dimensional asymptotic metric.

  2. Heterotic String Sigma Models: Discrete Light Cone Quantization and Its Current-Current Deformation

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The authors build a heterotic nonrelativistic string sigma model, show it defines heterotic string theory in DLCQ via T-duality, and recover the relativistic heterotic string through a current-current deformation.

  3. Wilson coefficients from a non-renormalization theorem in 2D SYM

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Non-renormalization in UV 2D SYM fixes the Wilson coefficient of the DVV operator in the IR orbifold CFT, consistent with matrix string theory.

  4. Worldsheet Formalism for Decoupling Limits in String Theory

    hep-th 2023-11 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Develops worldsheet sigma model for fundamental strings in critical type IIA limit showing nodal singularities and derives T-duality web unifying decoupling limits including ambitwistor and Carrollian strings.

  5. On the Underlying Nonrelativistic Nature of Relativistic Holography

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Standard AdS/CFT duality is reinterpreted as D-brane/black-brane duality in nonrelativistic D3-brane theory, with AdS5×S5 as a relativistic bubble in flat 3-Newton-Cartan geometry.

  6. Non-relativistic Strings: Classical solutions and exactly solvable models

    hep-th 2025-04 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

Non-relativistic strings on R x S2 admit spinning and pulsating solutions whose leading and next-to-leading order dynamics are cast as Neumann-Rosochatius-like solvable models with Bohr-Sommerfeld energy spectra.
