The present rate of the expansion of our Universe, the Hubble constant, can be predicted from the cosmological model using measurements of the early Universe, or more directly measured from the late Universe. But as these measurements improved, a surprising disagreement between the two appeared. In 2019, a number of independent measurements of the late Universe using different methods and data provided consistent results making the discrepancy with the early Universe predictions increasingly hard to ignore. We review key advances realized by 2019: -- The local or late Universe measurement of the Hubble constant improved from 10% uncertainty twenty years ago to under 2% by the end of 2019. -- In 2019, multiple independent teams presented measurements with different methods and different calibrations to produce consistent results. -- These late Universe estimations disagree at 4$\sigma$ to 6$\sigma$ with predictions made from the Cosmic Microwave Background in conjunction with the standard cosmological model, a disagreement that is hard to explain or ignore.

  1. A First Observational Assessment of Cosmic Backreaction Over an Extended Redshift Range

    astro-ph.CO 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 7.0

First direct constraints on total cosmic backreaction over a significant redshift range are consistent with vanishing backreaction within 1 sigma but are too weak to exclude meaningful backreaction.

  2. $\Lambda_{\rm s}$CDM cosmology from a type-II minimally modified gravity

    astro-ph.CO 2024-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0

Λ_s VCDM is a predictive model combining Λ_s CDM with VCDM gravity via an auxiliary scalar field and sigmoid-smoothed potentials to enable stable mirror AdS-to-dS transitions with possible transient acceleration.

  3. Charting the expansion of the Universe from z$\sim$0 to z$\sim$14 with HII galaxies

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0

Using the HII-galaxy luminosity–velocity-dispersion relation, the authors extend the Hubble diagram to z≈14 and derive h=0.725±0.040, Ωm=0.308, and w consistent with ΛCDM.

  4. Towards a causal effective thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity

    gr-qc 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0

Extends scalar-tensor gravity thermodynamics to causal Israel-Stewart model via timelike heat flux ansatz, decoupling T and K while preserving GR equilibrium.

  5. A First Observational Assessment of Cosmic Backreaction Over an Extended Redshift Range

    astro-ph.CO 2026-04 conditional novelty 6.0

First model-light constraints on Ω_R + 3Ω_Q from Pantheon+ and BAO reconstructions are consistent with flat FLRW yet too broad to exclude percent-level backreaction.

  6. Evidence for deviation in gravitational light deflection from general relativity at cosmological scales with KiDS-Legacy and CMB lensing

    astro-ph.CO 2026-02 conditional novelty 6.0

KiDS-Legacy weak lensing plus CMB data yields a 3 sigma deviation in light deflection from GR in a Lambda CDM background, with the signal driven by large-scale CMB lensing amplitudes.

  7. Hubble tension in k-essence: Evidence for robust tension alleviation

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0

Dilaton and tachyon k-essence models robustly reduce Planck–late-Universe H0 tension to 0.14σ and 0.69σ without dataset-dependent fine-tuning of model parameters.

  8. Towards a causal effective thermodynamics of scalar-tensor gravity

    gr-qc 2026-05 conditional novelty 5.0

A causal Israel–Stewart extension of scalar-tensor thermodynamics is constructed via a timelike heat-flux ansatz, enabling the first explicit split of K and T in Bianchi I and FLRW universes.

  9. Cosmological intercept tension

    astro-ph.CO 2026-04 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Tensions in the supernova intercept a_B at z~0.01 in PantheonPlus and z~0.1 in DES-Y5 point to data systematics or inter-survey inconsistencies rather than new physics, aligning H0 measurements and reducing support fo...

  10. New constraints on cosmic anisotropy from galaxy clusters using an improved dipole fitting method

    astro-ph.CO 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Galaxy cluster observations yield two preferred directions with cosmic anisotropy amplitude of about 5.3 times 10 to the minus 4 at roughly 1 sigma overall significance, though higher in the XMM-Newton subsample.

  11. Resolving the Planck-DESI tension by nonminimally coupled quintessence

    astro-ph.CO 2025-08 unverdicted novelty 5.0

Non-minimally coupled quintessence resolves the Planck-DESI Ω_m tension at >3σ while the effective equation of state stays above w=-1 and other tensions on neutrino mass and growth rate are relieved.
