Starting with a choice of a gauge group in four dimensions, there is often freedom in the choice of magnetic and dyonic line operators. Different consistent choices of these operators correspond to distinct physical theories, with the same correlation functions of local operators in R^4. In some cases these choices are permuted by shifting the theta-angle by 2pi. In other cases they are labeled by new discrete theta-like parameters. Using this understanding we gain new insight into the dynamics of four-dimensional gauge theories and their phases. The existence of these distinct theories clarifies a number of issues in electric/magnetic dualities of supersymmetric gauge theories, both for the conformal N=4 theories and for the low-energy dualities of N=1 theories.

  1. The AdS/$\mathsf{C}$-$\mathsf{P}$-${\mathsf T}$ Correspondence

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 8.0 of 10

N=4 super Yang-Mills has P and T symmetries that mix with CP and CT under S-duality, and these map to specific worldsheet and geometric symmetries of Type IIB string theory.

  2. The geometry-first formulation of gauge theory is not equivalent to the symmetry-first one

    physics.hist-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The natural functor from geometry-first generating objects to principal bundles with matter is faithful but neither essentially surjective nor full, so the two formulations of gauge theory are not categorically equivalent.

  3. Generalized Families of QFTs

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Generalized family anomalies for broken higher-group and non-invertible symmetries constrain RG flows and IR phases of QFT families, with explicit application to deformed 4d QCD.

  4. Disjoint additivity and local quantum physics

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Local quantum systems should obey disjoint additivity plus Haag duality, a combination that survives higher-form symmetries and fails for known nonlocal constructions.

  5. When CP requires $\bar\theta=0$, not $\bar\theta=\pi$

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

CP alone allows the QCD theta angle to be 0 or pi; choosing a gauge group with enlarged theta periodicity forces CP to select 0, eliminating the excluded pi value.

  6. Symmetry theta angles and topological Witten effects

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Symmetry theta angles are intrinsic, Lagrangian-independent parameters of any non-anomalous Abelian invertible symmetry, and their universal effect is a topological Witten effect that shuffles twisted sectors while pr...

  7. S-duality of boundary lines in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theories and supersymmetric indices

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Boundary Wilson and 't Hooft line two-point functions in N=4 SYM match exactly under S-duality, with closed forms from Macdonald polynomials.

  8. AMSB in Truly Confining Gauge Theories

    hep-th 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Adding small AMSB to t-confining SUSY gauge theories moves the ground state to a superpotential branch and predicts discrete and flavor symmetry breaking such as Z6 to Z2 and Z16 x SU(2) to SO(2).

  9. Line operator indices of S-fold theories

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Line-operator Schur indices for S-fold theories are matched to Wilson-'t Hooft indices in rank-2 N=4 SYM once giant graviton corrections are included, with new fivebrane-junction indices derived for k=3,4,6.

  10. Perusing confining pseudoreal theories: a story of emerging massless spin-1 bosons

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Confining pseudoreal gauge theories leave free massless spin-1 composites in the IR—one for almost all one-species models, two plus an NGB for the only confining two-species model.

  11. Anomaly-induced vanishing of brane partition functions

    hep-th 2025-10 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Anomalies imply vanishing brane partition functions; this yields unified derivations of the Freed-Witten and M5 shifted-quantization conditions and new S-fold D3-brane constraints.

  12. Symmetry, Symmetry Topological Field Theory and von Neumann Algebra

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The symmetric-sector von Neumann algebra of a QFT violates additivity or Haag duality exactly when the Lagrangian algebra of its SymTFT contains operators beyond the identity, with a sharper criterion distinguishing t...

  13. Charge quantisation, monopoles and emergent symmetry in the Standard Model and its embeddings

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper maps the global structure of the Standard Model gauge group to 1-form symmetries, derives the allowed electric and magnetic charge lattices for each candidate group, and presents a new anomaly-free model rea...

  14. Generalized Symmetries Phase Transitions with Local Quantum Fields

    cond-mat.str-el 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper shows that local gauge theories in 3+1d and 2+1d can realize SPT, SET, and symmetry-breaking phase transitions for one-form symmetries, including phases distinguished by symmetry fractionalization.

  15. On the Physics of Higher Condensation Defects

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Topological defects from higher gauging are shown, via explicit Lagrangian computations, to satisfy the Karoubi completeness condition of Johnson-Freyd's higher fusion categories, and this is identified with splitting...

  16. Landau theory for lattice higher gauge theory and Kramers-Wannier duality

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Lattice higher gauge theories are rewritten as Landau field theories on closed surfaces, yielding a unified phase description and an infrared duality between higher-form Landau theories.
