We consider the impact of a weakly coupled environment comprising a light scalar field on the open dynamics of a quantum probe field, resulting in a master equation for the probe field that features corrections to the coherent dynamics, as well as decoherence and momentum diffusion. The light scalar is assumed to couple to matter either through a nonminimal coupling to gravity or, equivalently, through a Higgs portal. Motivated by applications to experiments such as atom interferometry, we assume that the probe field can be initialized, by means of external driving, in a state that is not an eigenstate of the light scalar-field--probe system, and we derive the master equation for single-particle matrix elements of the reduced density operator of a toy model. We comment on the possibilities for experimental detection and the related challenges, and highlight possible pathways for further improvements. This derivation of the master equation requires techniques of non-equilibrium quantum field theory, including the Feynman-Vernon influence functional and thermo field dynamics, used to motivate a method of Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann-like reduction. In order to obtain cutoff-independent results for the probe-field dynamics, we find that it is necessary to use a time-dependent renormalization procedure. Specifically, we show that non-Markovian effects following a quench, namely the violation of time-translational invariance due to finite-time effects, lead to a time-dependent modulation of the usual vacuum counterterms.

  1. Emergence of the Scrooge Ensemble in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model

    quant-ph 2026-07 accept novelty 7.5 of 10

All moments of the projected ensemble in the SYK model exactly coincide with those of the Scrooge ensemble, generated by replica-permutation saddles of the measurement path integral, even at arbitrarily short times.

  2. Neutrino Constraints on Scalar-Tensor Gravity

    hep-ph 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Spatially varying scalar fields rescale neutrino masses and arrival times, and neutrino data bound these rescaling parameters for Symmetron and Chameleon models.

  3. Mutual information as a measure of renormalizability

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The logarithmic slope of momentum-space mutual information with mode separation classifies λφⁿ theories into super-renormalizable, marginal, and non-renormalizable.

  4. Inflationary Decoherence from the Gravitational Floor

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Gravitational self-interactions alone decohere super-Hubble inflationary fluctuations with purity loss growing as (aH/k)^5, faster than the a^3 growth of earlier calculations.

  5. An Open Effective Field Theory for light in a medium

    hep-th 2024-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A dissipative open EFT for photons in a medium is constructed, featuring a deformed advanced gauge symmetry and a noise constraint vμ(jμ+ξμ)=0.

  6. Direct detection of solar chameleons with electron recoil data from XENONnT

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

XENONnT electron-recoil data bound solar chameleons to log10 β_eff < −6.9, independent of the potential index n for inverse power-law chameleons at the dark-energy scale.

  7. Particles in finite volumes and a toy model of decaying neutrons

    hep-ph 2025-04 reject novelty 4.0 of 10

A toy scalar model of neutron decay suggests finite-volume effects and initial neutron-daughter correlations can shift the predicted neutron lifetime to about 887 seconds, but the agreement is obtained by tuning a parameter.
