In a theory of quantum gravity, states can be represented as wavefunctionals that assign an amplitude to a given configuration of matter fields and the metric on a spatial slice. These wavefunctionals must obey a set of constraints as a consequence of the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory, the most important of which is known as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We study these constraints perturbatively by expanding them to leading nontrivial order in Newton's constant about a background AdS spacetime. We show that, even within perturbation theory, any wavefunctional that solves these constraints must have specific correlations between a component of the metric at infinity and energetic excitations of matter fields or transverse-traceless gravitons. These correlations disallow strictly localized excitations. We prove perturbatively that two states or two density matrices that coincide at the boundary for an infinitesimal interval of time must coincide everywhere in the bulk. This analysis establishes a perturbative version of holography for theories of gravity coupled to matter in AdS.

  1. Relational path integral, effective actions and quantum frame covariance in gravity

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

The gravitational path integral is reformulated with dynamical reference frames, producing gauge-invariant correlators, frame-dependent vacua, and effective actions, with sharpness of events becoming frame-relative.

  2. York time in JT gravity

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In JT gravity, the Hartle-Hawking wavefunction satisfies a Schrodinger equation in York time with a Hermitian squeezing Hamiltonian, and York time evolution is a unitary change of the length basis rather than physical...

  3. Holographic timelike complexity for de Sitter

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Timelike subregion volume complexity in de Sitter grows exponentially early and diverges hyperfast at a maximal duration; near the SdS black hole horizon the divergence is replaced by slower, claimed-nonlinear growth.

  4. Geometric noise spectrum in interferometers

    hep-th 2026-01 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

The noise spectrum an interferometer would see from quantum spacetime jitter is computed for vacuum, thermal, squeezed, and scalar-backreaction states; all are Planck-suppressed.

  5. Imprint of the black hole interior on thermal four-point correlators

    hep-th 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Analytically continuing and smearing thermal four-point correlators turns them into flat-space scattering amplitudes at a bulk point inside the black hole.

  6. Cosmological correlators in gravitationally-constrained de Sitter states

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Cosmological correlators in gravitationally constrained de Sitter states are conformally invariant and differ from QFT vacuum correlators, but relational observables with a heavy background state can reproduce QFT results.

  7. Observers and Timekeepers: From the Page-Wootters Mechanism to the Gravitational Path Integral

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Metric summation produces the problem of time, topology summation produces the one-dimensional Hilbert space, and a timekeeper path integral gives observer-dependent holography.

  8. Algebras, Entanglement Islands, and Observers

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Entanglement islands in the AdS/bath island model realize the quantum-gravity 'observer' as a Goldstone vector mode, making the island operator algebra an emergent Type II∞ von Neumann algebra.

  9. An apologia for islands

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Entanglement islands and Page curves can arise in massless gravity without an external bath, and compactly supported gauge-invariant operators exist in islands around generic symmetry-breaking black hole backgrounds.

  10. Wheeler-DeWitt equation and Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetry

    hep-th 2025-06 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

BRST-invariant extensions of the BMS generators are constructed and used to define matrix elements between Wheeler-DeWitt states.

  11. The Mechanism behind the Information Encoding for Islands

    hep-th 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Island information is encoded in the bath because island operators are gravitationally dressed to the bath via the massive-graviton Stückelberg field, realized as Wilson lines in the Karch-Randall braneworld.

  12. Coherent states versus Glauber-Sudarshan States: Bootstrapping, Schwinger-Keldysh Contours and Lefschetz Thimbles

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Quasi-de Sitter spacetimes can be realized as Glauber-Sudarshan excited states built over supersymmetric Minkowski vacua, held consistent by a bootstrap self-consistency equation rather than by a potential minimum.

  13. Quantum gravity observables: observation, algebras, and mathematical structure

    hep-th 2025-05 conditional novelty 3.0 of 10

A perspective arguing that gravitationally dressed observables generalize crossed product algebras and that quantum gravity may need non-algebraic structure on Hilbert space.
