Numerical relativity has faced the problem that standard 3+1 simulations of black hole spacetimes without singularity excision and with singularity avoiding lapse and vanishing shift fail after an evolution time of around 30-40M due to the so-called slice stretching. We discuss lapse and shift conditions for the non-excision case that effectively cure slice stretching and allow run times of 1000M and more.

  1. Nonlinear Dynamics near the Threshold of Gravitational Collapse

    gr-qc 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Perturbation theory around flat space fails before black hole formation once peak luminosity exceeds ~10^-2 L_Planck; near criticality the spectrum flattens to 1/ω, matching the prediction from discrete self-similarity.

  2. Cuspidal Singularities in Collapsing Domain Walls

    hep-th 2026-05 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Collapsing domain walls generically form cuspidal edge and vertex singularities captured by Nambu-Goto and eikonal approximations and reproduced in field theory simulations.

  3. Ultralight Boson Ionization from Comparable-Mass Binary Black Holes

    gr-qc 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Ionization of boson molecules bound to a black hole binary can dominate gravitational-wave losses during early inspiral, imprinting a turnover in the nanohertz GW background and circularizing the orbit.

  4. Growing black-hole hair in nonminimally coupled biscalar gravity

    gr-qc 2025-01 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Numerical simulations in the decoupling limit show that an axion and a dilaton form non-trivial hair around black holes in axi-dilaton gravity, with the kinetic coupling between the fields increasing the effect.

  5. GRACE: An Open-Source Framework for GPU-Accelerated Numerical Relativity

    gr-qc 2026-07 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

GRACE is a validated, open-source, Kokkos+p4est GPU-portable framework that evolves ideal GRMHD with constrained transport self-consistently coupled to Z4c Einstein equations on fixed or adaptive meshes.

  6. Ringdown and lensing of triple systems

    gr-qc 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Numerical relativity simulations of triple black hole systems reveal redshift effects and gravitational lensing in ringdown signals from head-on mergers, with no additional black hole formation from amplified waves.

  7. The error budget of binary neutron star merger simulations for configurations with high spin

    gr-qc 2025-06 accept novelty 6.0 of 10

For highly spinning (chi=0.5) binary neutron stars, evolution code choice is the largest numerical waveform error, and current analytical models disagree with numerical relativity beyond that error after the stars touch.

  8. SACRA-2D: New axisymmetric general relativistic hydrodynamics code with fixed mesh refinement

    astro-ph.HE 2025-02 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

SACRA-2D is a new axisymmetric relativistic hydrodynamics code with the HLLC solver and adaptive mesh refinement, validated by benchmarks showing improved accuracy over the TVDLF solver.

  9. Stable long-term evolution in numerical relativity

    gr-qc 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Two modified CCZ4 schemes that propagate momentum constraint violations without damping suppress a late-time instability seen in long BSSN black hole simulations.

  10. Nucleosynthesis in the fast ejecta of a neutron star merger

    astro-ph.HE 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Free neutrons survive r-process freeze-out in fast ejecta of neutron star mergers and their beta-decay heating produces a visible early kilonova precursor for mass fractions above ~0.05.

  11. AthenaK simulations of the binary black hole merger GW150914

    gr-qc 2025-06 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A new open-source GPU code, AthenaK, reproduces the GW150914 merger: remnant mass within 0.01%, spin within 0.02%, and waveform phase within about 0.35 radians of established simulations.
