We also theoretically calculate for the first time the eccentricity e in this process, which is set by the fluctuating gravitational quadrupole moment of the progenitor's convective envelope during Roche-lobe detachment. [...] Despite the order of magnitude higher envelope mass at detachment m_e in our case, the eccentricity is barely affected because e∝m_e^{1/6}, explaining why intermediate-mass (m_wd≲0.6 M_⊙) CO white dwarfs have similar eccentricities to lower mass helium white dwarfs.
The assumption that eccentricity is set solely by the fluctuating gravitational quadrupole moment of the convective envelope during Roche-lobe detachment, combined with the premise that intermediate-mass progenitors detach specifically when their non-degenerate cores ignite helium.
Eccentricities in these systems scale weakly with envelope mass at detachment as e proportional to m_e to the 1/6, making them similar for CO white dwarfs from intermediate-mass stars and helium white dwarfs from lower-mass stars.
