Oort Cloud Ecology -- IV. Exchanging Asteroids

Erwan Hochart, Simon Portegies Zwart

Sub-virial fractal star clusters exchange asteroids more readily than virialised Plummer clusters, and both suppress Oort Cloud formation.

Claims

C1strongest claim

The sub-virial fractal cluster exhibits richer dynamics, with asteroids and planets more frequently acquiring high eccentricities and inclinations, along with a larger fraction of captured and rogue objects. Additionally, this cluster configuration has its extreme trans-Neptunian object and Sednoid analogues occupy regions of phase-space in semi-major axis, eccentricity and inclination commonly frequented by captured asteroids.

C2weakest assumption

The chosen initial conditions (virial radius of 0.5 pc, 150 stars, exactly 500 asteroids per star, 1-8 planets for stars below 2 solar masses, and integration to exactly 30 Myr) are representative of real star-forming regions and sufficient to capture the dominant processes for Oort Cloud assembly and asteroid exchange.

C3one line summary

Sub-virial fractal star clusters produce more captured asteroids, rogue objects, and high-eccentricity/inclination bodies than virialised Plummer clusters, but Oort Cloud formation is suppressed in both.
