We discuss the relation between singularities of correlation functions and causal properties of the bulk spacetime in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular, we argue that the boundary field theory correlation functions are singular when the insertion points are connected causally by a bulk null geodesic. This implies the existence of "bulk-cone singularities" in boundary theory correlation functions which lie inside the boundary light-cone. We exhibit the pattern of singularities in various asymptotically AdS spacetimes and argue that this pattern can be used to probe the bulk geometry. We apply this correspondence to the specific case of shell collapse in AdS/CFT and indicate a sharp feature in the boundary observables corresponding to black hole event horizon formation.

  1. Light-like retarded correlators and the horizon

    hep-th 2026-07 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

At large light-like momenta, holographic retarded correlators scale as a horizon-curvature-dependent power of ω, weaker than the naive ω^{2Δ−d}.

  2. Bulk-cone singularities and echoes from AdS exotic compact objects

    hep-th 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

AdS exotic compact objects imprint bulk-cone singularities from null geodesics and echoes from trapped waves on CFT Green functions, signaling no horizon.

  3. Heavy-Heavy-Light Asymptotics from Thermal Correlators

    hep-th 2025-06 accept novelty 7.0 of 10

The authors derive and test systematic large-dimension asymptotics for heavy-heavy-light OPE coefficients in 3D CFTs from thermal one-point functions on S1 x S2.

  4. New bulk cone singularities in Vaidya-like spacetimes from large $c$ conformal blocks

    hep-th 2024-11 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

In a time-symmetric Vaidya-like spacetime, radial null geodesics create boundary bulk-cone singularities only when r_+ < l, and a large-c CFT2 computation reproduces the exact singularity time.

  5. Composite AdS geodesics for CFT correlators and timelike entanglement entropy

    hep-th 2025-11 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A bulk extremization prescription produces composite timelike-spacelike geodesics whose complex length exactly matches CFT two-point functions at timelike separation, including behind the BTZ horizon.

  6. Temporal Entanglement from Holographic Entanglement Entropy

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Holographic timelike entanglement entropy is defined by analytically continuing all candidate extremal surfaces through the light cone and selecting the one with smallest real part of the area.

  7. Black holes from chaos

    hep-th 2025-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Chaotic thermal correlators can be computed by mapping Lanczos coefficients to a black-hole scattering problem, giving quasinormal-mode resonances from short-time data.

  8. Bulk Motion in Global AdS$_3$ from the Boundary Energy-Density Perspective

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Boundary energy densities in CFT2 encode the periodic boundary-to-boundary propagation of null excitations in global AdS3 via chiral peaks whose weights and timing track bulk geodesics.

    hep-th 2026-01 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

In the AdS3/BTZ holographic setup, the expectation value of a scalar primary in a bulk wave-packet state exhibits temperature-dependent exponential decay along the light cone, absent at zero temperature, while the ene...

  10. AdS gravastar and its signatures from dual conformal field theory

    hep-th 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

AdS gravastar glued from AdS-Schwarzschild and de Sitter yields horizon-less signatures including specific bulk-cone singularities and echoes in dual CFT retarded Green functions.

  11. Photon spheres and bulk probes in $\text{AdS}_3$/$\text{CFT}_2$: the quantum BTZ black hole

    hep-th 2026-03 unverdicted novelty 4.0 of 10

Conditions for boundary-anchored geodesics are derived in all branches of the quantum BTZ black hole, supporting a conjecture that photon spheres enable space-like connections between time-like separated boundary points.
