We present the first models of extreme-mass-ratio inspirals within the effective-one-body (EOB) formalism, focusing on quasi-circular orbits into non-rotating black holes. We show that the phase difference and (Newtonian normalized) amplitude difference between analytical EOB and numerical Teukolsky-based gravitational waveforms can be reduced to less than 10^(-1) rad and less than 2 x 10^(-3), respectively, after a 2-year evolution. The inclusion of post-Newtonian self-force terms in the EOB approach leads to a phase disagreement of roughly 6-27 rad after a 2-year evolution. Such inclusion could also allow for the EOB modeling of waveforms from intermediate-mass ratio, quasi-circular inspirals.

  1. Improved Constraints on Modified Gravity with Eccentric Gravitational Waves

    gr-qc 2019-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Eccentric post-circular waveforms in Jordan-Brans-Dicke-Fierz theory predict that projected constraints on the Brans-Dicke parameter first worsen with eccentricity, then recover for eccentricities above about 0.03.

  2. Tidal perturbations of an extreme mass ratio inspiral around a Kerr black hole

    gr-qc 2026-01 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A closed-form Kerr metric under slow quadrupolar tides yields spin-dependent tidal shifts of the ISCO and light ring, with larger shifts for retrograde orbits around fast-spinning holes.

  3. Extreme mass-ratio inspiral within an ultralight scalar cloud I. Scalar radiation

    gr-qc 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Scalar radiation from an EMRI in an ultralight scalar cloud is computed semi-analytically, showing dipole clouds decelerate and quadrupole clouds accelerate the inspiral, with up to about 100 rad dephasing after 18 months.
