abstract

Magnetic fields in extragalactic space between galaxy clusters may induce conversions between photons and axion-like particles (ALPs), thereby shielding the photons from absorption on the extragalactic background light. For TeV gamma rays, the oscillation length ($l_{\rm osc}$) of the photon-ALP system becomes inevitably of the same order as the coherence length of the magnetic field ($l$) and the length over which the field changes significantly (transition length $l_{\rm t}$) due to refraction on background photons. We derive exact statistical evolution equations for the mean and variance of the photon and ALP transfer functions in the non-adiabatic regime ($l_{\rm osc} \sim l \gg l_{\rm t}$). We also make analytical predictions for the transfer functions in the quasi-adiabatic regime ($l_{\rm osc} \ll l, l_{\rm t}$). Our results are important in light of the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), and may also be applied to models with non-zero ALP masses.

  1. Constraints on High-Frequency Gravitational Waves from Graviton-Photon Conversion in the M87 Galaxy

    hep-ph 2026-04 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Graviton–photon conversion in M87's magnetic field sets h_c and Ωgw h² limits 1–5 orders of magnitude tighter than Milky Way-based bounds across 10^10–10^27 Hz.

  2. Graviton Floor

    gr-qc 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Photon-to-graviton conversion in blazar jets dominates a new graviton background that sets a floor for high-frequency GW detectors, analogous to the neutrino floor.

  3. Line-of-sight magnetic-field propagation effects on axion-like particle constraints from GRB 221009A

    hep-ph 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Intergalactic magnetic field strength, coherence scale, and stochastic properties significantly alter ALP exclusion contours from GRB 221009A, while host-galaxy and Milky Way fields cause only mild changes.

  4. Lecture Notes: WISPs in gamma-ray astrophysics

    astro-ph.HE 2025-05 unverdicted novelty 1.0 of 10

The paper is a pedagogical review of axion-like particle searches in gamma-ray astrophysics, with tutorial derivations and a notebook-based analysis of NGC 1275, and it contains no new research result.
