The release of spin-down energy by a magnetar is a promising scenario to power several classes of extreme explosive transients. However, it lacks a firm basis because magnetar formation still represents a theoretical challenge. Using the first three-dimensional simulations of a convective dynamo based on a protoneutron star interior model, we demonstrate that the required dipolar magnetic field can be consistently generated for sufficiently fast rotation rates. The dynamo instability saturates in the magnetostrophic regime with the magnetic energy exceeding the kinetic energy by a factor of up to 10. Our results are compatible with the observational constraints on galactic magnetar field strength and provide strong theoretical support for millisecond protomagnetar models of gamma-ray burst and superluminous supernova central engines.

  1. 3D simulations of a complete convective silicon shell burning phase

    astro-ph.SR 2026-08 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

A 3D simulation of a convective silicon-burning shell in a 14 solar mass star burns out about 800 s earlier than a 1D MESA model, suggesting weaker convective boundary mixing and a convective-reactive energy profile.

  2. Transport Properties of the MRI in Differentially Rotating Neutron Stars

    astro-ph.HE 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Saturated MRI turbulence in differentially rotating neutron stars yields ℓ_mix ≈ (0.01–0.1) λ_MRI, largely independent of density, so standard GRLES mixing-length prescriptions overestimate transport by about an order...

  3. Impact of rotation on the accretion of entropy perturbations in collapsing massive stars

    astro-ph.SR 2025-09 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Rotation has little effect on entropy perturbations falling onto a supernova shock: the sound and vortex waves they create stay below about 1% of the local sound speed, and convective eddies dominate for the modes tha...

Using a linear SVM, EOS classification from bounce gravitational waves remains robust to real noise, progenitor diversity, and bounce-time uncertainty in the frequency domain, but collapses in the time domain under ti...
