These lecture notes are based on a course given by Mark Hindmarsh at the 24th Saalburg Summer School 2018 and written up by Marvin L\"uben, Johannes Lumma and Martin Pauly. The aim is to provide the necessary basics to understand first-order phase transitions in the early universe, to outline how they leave imprints in gravitational waves, and advertise how those gravitational waves could be detected in the future. A first-order phase transition at the electroweak scale is a prediction of many theories beyond the Standard Model, and is also motivated as an ingredient of some theories attempting to provide an explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry in our Universe. Starting from bosonic and fermionic statistics, we derive Boltzmann's equation and generalise to a fluid of particles with field dependent mass. We introduce the thermal effective potential for the field in its lowest order approximation, discuss the transition to the Higgs phase in the Standard Model and beyond, and compute the probability for the field to cross a potential barrier. After these preliminaries, we provide a hydrodynamical description of first-order phase transitions as it is appropriate for describing the early Universe. We thereby discuss the key quantities characterising a phase transition, and how they are imprinted in the gravitational wave power spectrum that might be detectable by the space-based gravitational wave detector LISA in the 2030s.

  1. Quantum field nucleating and Wigner functions

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.5 of 10

The one-loop over-the-barrier nucleation rate in a thermal QFT is Affleck’s formula generalized to fields, not Linde’s, and still carries quantum prefactor effects even when the bounce is classically symmetric.

  2. Non-conformal obstructions to bubble expansion

    hep-th 2026-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Non-conformal equations of state introduce wall and flow obstructions that delete entire classes of bubble solutions and create 'shocked detonations', shrinking the allowed wall-velocity space and suppressing gravitat...

  3. Entropy production at electroweak bubble walls from scalar field fluctuations

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Scalar fluctuations produce a nonvanishing entropy discontinuity across an electroweak bubble wall even in the zero-friction limit, showing LTE-based wall velocity upper bounds cannot be saturated.

  4. Particle Production via Rippled Bubble Walls

    hep-ph 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A rippled bubble wall produces heavy particles resonantly when the momentum transfer matches the ripple frequency, potentially raising dark-matter abundance by orders of magnitude.

  5. CosmoLattice 2.0

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

CosmoLattice v2.0 extends lattice cosmology simulations with non-minimal scalars, ALP–gauge couplings, defect networks, low-storage RK integrators, optimized GWs, and O(10) GPU speedups.

  6. Self-Consistent Parker Bound on Magnetic Monopoles

    hep-ph 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

A self-consistent Parker bound on magnetic monopoles is derived using the galactic mean-field dynamo eigenmode and turbulent field seeding and acceleration, producing modified flux limits at low and intermediate masse...

  7. Vacuum bubbles from cosmic ripples

    hep-ph 2026-04 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Over-densities in the early universe reduce the Euclidean action for vacuum decay, making false-vacuum bubbles nucleate earlier; under-densities do the opposite.

  8. Constraints on High-Frequency Gravitational Waves from Graviton-Photon Conversion in the M87 Galaxy

    hep-ph 2026-04 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Graviton–photon conversion in M87's magnetic field sets h_c and Ωgw h² limits 1–5 orders of magnitude tighter than Milky Way-based bounds across 10^10–10^27 Hz.

  9. Gravitational Waves from Confinement in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills Theory

    hep-ph 2025-12 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For pure SU(N) Yang-Mills dark sectors, confinement transitions produce gravitational waves too weak for LISA, ET, CE, DECIGO or BBO, with peak amplitude at N≈20 and a large-N decay h²Ω_peak ∝ N^{-14/3}.

  10. Probing Flavour Deconstruction via Primordial Gravitational Waves

    hep-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Flavour deconstruction phase transitions can generate detectable gravitational waves, but their spectra typically peak above the millihertz range, making LISA detection possible yet not guaranteed.

  11. Dark Sector Electroweak Baryogenesis In Light Of The Galactic Center Excess

    hep-ph 2025-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

A dark-sector electroweak baryogenesis model with a ~50 GeV fermionic dark matter candidate can simultaneously match the baryon asymmetry, the dark matter relic density, and (at ~2 sigma) the galactic center gamma-ray...

    astro-ph.CO 2026-07 accept novelty 5.0 of 10

Detailed continuum-to-lattice schemes are given for perfect/imperfect fluids alone or coupled to scalars/gauges in FLRW, enabling self-consistent CosmoLattice simulations of early-Universe plasma dynamics and GWs.

    hep-ph 2025-11 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A radiative-seesaw model with singlet-doublet dark matter can satisfy neutrino, muon, flavor, relic, and direct-detection constraints while producing a first-order electroweak phase transition with gravitational waves...

    hep-ph 2025-11 unverdicted novelty 5.0 of 10

Using simulated Taiji data, the authors show that a stochastic gravitational-wave signal from an electroweak phase transition in the singlet-extended Standard Model can constrain the Higgs cubic and quartic self-couplings.

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

A temporary axion mass spike during a first-order electroweak phase transition can make the QCD axion dark matter over a wide range of decay constants without a tuned initial angle.

  16. Upper Limits on the Isotropic Gravitational-Wave Background from the first part of LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA's fourth Observing Run

    gr-qc 2025-08 accept novelty 4.0 of 10

No gravitational-wave background is detected in O1-O4a data; the new CBC-spectrum limit Ω_GW(25 Hz) = 2.0×10^-9 (95%) is 1.7x tighter and remains roughly 2-3x above the GWTC-4-predicted astrophysical background of 0.9×10^-9.
