Recent advances in our understanding of symmetry in quantum many-body systems offer the possibility of a generalized Landau paradigm that encompasses all equilibrium phases of matter. This is a brief and elementary review of some of these developments.

  1. Characterizing gapped phases by smeared boundary conformal field theories: Duality in unusual ordering with spontaneously broken generalized symmetries

    hep-th 2026-05 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Gapped phases dual to massless RG flows in 2D CFTs exhibit unusual ordering via spontaneous breaking of non-group-like symmetries and are characterized using smeared boundary CFTs applied to smeared Ishibashi states.

  2. Generalized Families of QFTs

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

Generalized family anomalies for broken higher-group and non-invertible symmetries constrain RG flows and IR phases of QFT families, with explicit application to deformed 4d QCD.

  3. The Line, the Strip and the Duality Defect

    hep-th 2026-02 unverdicted novelty 7.0 of 10

The XY-plaquette model is claimed to possess a continuous SO(2) non-invertible duality symmetry at arbitrary coupling, realized by open condensation defects in its symmetry TFT.

  4. Disjoint additivity and local quantum physics

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 7.0 of 10

Local quantum systems should obey disjoint additivity plus Haag duality, a combination that survives higher-form symmetries and fails for known nonlocal constructions.

  5. Tilts from 2-Groups

    hep-th 2026-08 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Line operators charged under the 1-form part of a 2-group symmetry must generically break the 0-form part, enforced by a family anomaly derived from Wess-Zumino consistency.

  6. Non-invertible symmetries in the axiverse, and the imaginary wormholes

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Imaginary wormholes and the IDB imply that towers of BPS EFT instantons generate infinitely many superpotential terms that break non-invertible axion shift symmetries in N=1 axiverse models.

  7. Notes on (-2)-form symmetries

    hep-th 2026-06 unverdicted novelty 6.0 of 10

Introduces (-2)-form symmetries that modify the SymTFT action to relate QFTs differing by anomaly data or non-invertible symmetry associators, illustrated in 2D-4D models, fusion categories, club-sandwich RG flows, an...

  8. Higher-form (Quasi)Hydrodynamics from Holography: Deformations and Dualities

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

Massless and massive higher-form gauge fields in anti-de Sitter space yield a full low-energy map of diffusive, relaxing, and emergent-photon modes governed by double-trace deformations.

  9. SymTFT actions, Condensable algebras and Categorical anomaly resolutions

    hep-th 2025-09 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

For Q8 and Rep(Q8), the paper computes condensable algebras, identifies intrinsically gapless SPT phases, and derives fusion-category short exact sequences that resolve categorical anomalies.

  10. Charge quantisation, monopoles and emergent symmetry in the Standard Model and its embeddings

    hep-ph 2025-07 conditional novelty 6.0 of 10

The paper maps the global structure of the Standard Model gauge group to 1-form symmetries, derives the allowed electric and magnetic charge lattices for each candidate group, and presents a new anomaly-free model rea...

  11. Landau theory for lattice higher gauge theory and Kramers-Wannier duality

    hep-th 2025-07 conditional novelty 5.0 of 10

Lattice higher gauge theories are rewritten as Landau field theories on closed surfaces, yielding a unified phase description and an infrared duality between higher-form Landau theories.

  12. Information Loss in Generalized Symmetry Breaking

    quant-ph 2025-09 conditional novelty 4.0 of 10

Anyon condensation is encoded as a conditional expectation between operator algebras, and the information it erases, measured by relative entropy, is claimed to be bounded by the log of the condensate's quantum dimension.

  13. Les Houches Lecture Notes on Tensor Networks

    cond-mat.str-el 2025-12 unverdicted novelty 2.0 of 10

A well-organized five-lecture review of tensor networks (MPS/PEPS/MPO) covering algorithms, phase classification, string-nets, strange correlators, and dualities; it contains no new research results.
